Low Back Pain: Why It Keeps Coming Back
Subject: Why Does Your Back Keep "Going Out"?
One of the most common things I hear from new patients is:
"My back goes out every few months."
Sometimes it happens lifting something heavy.
Sometimes after a long round of golf.
Sometimes while picking up a sock off the floor.
People usually blame the movement that triggered the pain. But more often than not, that movement wasn't the real problem...it was simply the last straw.
If your back keeps "going out," there's usually an underlying reason why.
What the Research Says
Low back pain is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, but here's the encouraging news: the vast majority of cases are not caused by serious structural damage.
Current research supports staying active, gradually rebuilding strength, and addressing the movement impairments contributing to the pain rather than relying solely on rest, medication, or passive treatments.
Many recurring episodes happen because the underlying problem was never fully addressed.
Pain improves...
Life gets busy...
Exercises stop...
And eventually the cycle repeats itself.
How I Treat It
When someone comes into my clinic with recurring low back pain, my first question isn't:
"Where does it hurt?"
It's: "Why does this keep happening?"
I'll evaluate your spinal mobility, hip mobility, core strength, hamstring length, daily habits, exercise routine, and any other contributing factors.
Treatment may include manual therapy, spinal manipulation, dry needling, mobility work, progressive strength training, and a customized exercise program designed specifically for your back and around your goals.
The goal isn't just getting you out of pain.
It's building a back that's stronger, more resilient, and less likely to flare up again.
Common Myth
"I have a bad back."
I honestly don't like that phrase.
Most people don't have a "bad back."
They have a back that needs a better strategy.
My Takeaway
If your back pain keeps coming back, don't assume that's just part of getting older.
Most recurring back pain has a reason and once we identify it, we can start changing it.
