Happy spring to you all! I hope you’ve had a chance to get out and enjoy it by now. A lot is going on in the world of nature. There is something rewarding about planting, too; there is satisfaction in watching something grow that we had helped get a start in life.
At the farm, we are keeping a close watch on the cows. We are expecting new baby calves any day now, and my boys can hardly wait. They get jealous if I’m down there planting or fertilizing corn while they are in school. They want to see the first calf!
Cows are interesting creatures sometimes. Did you know that there is often a lead cow in a herd of cows? Yes, they believe and live in politics too! We lost our old lead cow over the winter; she was old when we got her in 2019 but did a good job managing everyone. When moving from one pasture to another, we could depend on her to take the lead, and the others would follow. Since then, several cows have been trying to get the lead position. There is one that is gaining ground. She is one of the older cows and can’t walk quite as fast as the younger ones, but if one of those tries to pass her up, they get a painful belly punch!
They must be getting it figured out because I wanted to feed them in the corral and do a little sorting on Tuesday. The new lead cow brought them all in, and no one challenged her! Maybe there’ll be peace in the herd before the new calves are born.
Whether your life is touched by new baby plants or new baby calves, I wish you a peaceful day today.
Take care,
~ Ethan Weber
