From the Desk of Tara Hong
Hello fellow Lowell High alumni, 

My name is Tara Hong, Lowell High Class of 2018, and I am the new Program Coordinator at Project LEARN. 

I was born in Cambodia. I came to the United States when I was 13 years old, speaking no English and having no understanding of American culture. When I got here, I went to Stoklosa Middle School - represent! After graduating from Lowell High, I went to Middlesex Community College and then transferred to the UMass Lowell, majoring Political Science.

I am a product of Lowell Public Schools and proud to say I got to where I am today because the support I received. 

Before I joined Project LEARN, my background was working in the community. My heart is with the community here in our City of Lowell. I used to work at the Cambodia Mutual Assistance Association of Greater Lowell as the Civic Engagement Coordinator. In 2022, at 22 years old, I decided to run for State Representative in the 18th Middlesex District in the City of Lowell. I chose to run because I wanted to see positive change. Although I was not elected, I am still driven to help the Lowell community and younger generations. That is one of the reasons why I am seeking an opportunity to join the Project LEARN team.

I am excited to be a part of the team and look forward to connecting with more Lowell High alumni through my work at Project LEARN.

Students Flip the Script
During our Flip the Script IT Roundtable with Middlesex 3 Coalition, 6 Lowell High students participated in a group discussion to create an open dialogue with industry professionals. 

Not only did the students receive game-changing advice on how to break into the field, they also gave the group of professionals a fresh insight on how to tap into the next generation of the STEM workforce and diversify their teams. 
Meet Alex Wahpo. A Lowell High senior class president and student-athlete, Alex first learned about Early College Lowell from his brother who was also in the program.

Alex is on track to obtain 27 total credits by the end of Spring 2023.

Thanks in part to guidance and support from his Early College Lowell advisors at Lowell High, Alex said that he was able to grow into a "more independent learner" and was equipped to meet the rigor of his classes.

"It's like the teachers provide you with the pieces of a puzzle, and it's up to you to solve it," said Alex, "They are always open to ask for help and will give you the resources you need to be successful."

From mentors, advisors, guest speakers, tutors and more, Lowell High Alumni are valuable resources for current students. The Lowell High Alumni Association is a collaboration between Project LEARN and the Lowell Public School district. The mission of the Alumni Association is to help alumni connect with each other, to engage with the school, community and to inspire future generations of Lowell High students through mentoring, advising and tutoring.
