This Week on Campus

The grade level celebrations have kicked off--starting with First Grade's Egypt celebration.

From the desk of the Headmaster

Spartan families,

Thank you to everyone who gave towards the Big Give last week. We are so appreciative of your continued support of our academy!

Next Friday, October 7th, is the last day of the 1st quarter. Report cards will be given to you at parent-teacher conferences on October 10th and 11th. Parent-teacher conferences are essential to the partnership between our school and families. They are an opportunity for you to meet with all your scholars’ teachers (homeroom, specials, interventionists, etc.) to understand better how your scholar is doing at school. Please look for an email from your scholar’s teacher for their sign-up genius link.

Operational Updates

Lost & Found Warning

Lost and Found items will be discarded on 10/7 to make room for additional items when scholars return after fall break.

ο»Ώ

Families should encourage scholars or stop by themselves to look through items left behind.

ο»ΏAttendance

Attendance matters! Here’s why:

ο»Ώ

  • Our campus funding is dependent on scholars attending school. This is the number one way WH receives funding from the state.
  • The amount we receive from the state is based on our average daily attendance. Every day your scholar attends school our campus receives over $45 in state funding.

How you can help us:

  • If your scholar is out sick, please send an email or doctor's note to our attendance mailbox at [email protected] for each day(s) your scholar is out sick.
  • Please be sure to have your scholar in their classes when attendance is taken each day at 9:50 AM.

Twig Book Fair

October 3-6th

The Twig Bookstore and the PSO are proud to host a book fair on October 3rd-6th here at Western Hills!

Lower School classroom teachers have signed up for a time slot where scholars can tour the book fair and look at books. In addition, they can purchase books on-site this year, which means scholars will need to bring cash with them if they wish to purchase a book. Please check the blog of your scholar's classroom or reach out to your classroom teacher regarding the date that your scholar will visit the book fair.

Online purchases will also be available at the Twig website, but be sure to use code GHWH when you purchase so the school can receive 20% kickback!

If you would like to donate books from the Twig Fair to the School Library, you can do so by ordering the books online and having them shipped to GHWH using the Address:

Parent Teacher Conferences

October 10 & 11

It is almost time for parent-teacher conferences! Parent-teacher conferences are a great way to connect with your scholar's teacher on academic and behavioral progress in the first quarter of the school year.

ο»Ώ

You can find the link to sign up for Parent teacher conferences in an email from your scholar's teacher no later than Friday. Sign-ups will be available beginning September 30th and ending October 8th at midnight.

Dean's Corner

Mrs. Arredondo on Bullying

As we near the end of the first quarter, our children have absorbed many of our practices and habits. There is order and joy around every corner. We are inviting our children to distinguish right from wrong, good and bad, through our literature. We are instilling a love of moral literacy in students instead of social media, which fogs their judgment of reality. Our children are learning how to become adults. During these early years at school, students will stumble, make mistakes, fail, AND persevere. Students will learn from their failures and become resilient. Additionally, this is the time when students will have peer-to-peer conflict, which gives us the perfect opportunity to guide students to work through their disagreements and model a healthy and productive (loving) resolution.

Our goal is to model for students how to actively listen, seek understanding, and forgive. We are all vital in this learning process as we steer them through bumps in the road to teach them how to have positive interactions with one another during times of conflict. We also hope that students will learn from the stories that we read to develop the tools they need to navigate through conflict.

We should also differentiate between bullying and normal childhood conflict. There has been an increase in the usage of the word bullying. Bullying is a serious allegation, and it should not be used lightly.

Bullying is an act that exploits an imbalance of power and places a student in reasonable fear of harm to their property/self and is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive. The continued action or threat creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive educational environment for the student. Demonstrating mean and unkind acts are wrong, but this is not bullying.

Thank you for continuing to partner with us in our journey to shepherd and guide our scholars to demonstrate our core virtues.

In Partnership,

Mrs. Arredondo

Winter Intramurals are quickly approaching!

New Change: Intramurals will be transitioning BACK to Register My Athlete for a smoother registration process. After fall athletics, we found the process not to our standards for creating rosters and being able to get information out quicker. Moving intramurals (NOT MS & HS athletics) back to Register My Athlete will help us with a smoother registration process and better enable us to get you the information you need.

What sport will be happening for 5th & 6th graders?

Co-Ed Soccer will be the next sport!

How do I register my student?

Please see the attached file: RMA Parents Instructions on how to register your child. The attached document: Full-length Parent Training – Register My Athlete Users2 will also give you step-by-step instructions with photos.

When is the registration and what is the cost?

Registration opens October 1 and closes October 19.

The cost to participate is $115 (which includes an intramural shirt) OR $100 if you have already received an intramural shirt. You can pay the fee at this link:

https://greatheartswesternhills.configio.com/pd/622/2022-2023-intramurals?returncom=productlist&source=search

Can I get some more information?

Absolutely! If your child is interested in participating in Winter Intramurals. Please come to the athletics meeting on 10/6/2022 at 6:30 pm.

How does academic eligibility work?

The goal of our intramural program is to allow our students to grow and learn in sport, while simultaneously preparing them for what it means to compete for their school as a Student-Athlete. Students must be passing ALL classes (70% or above) in order to be eligible to compete. Passing classes is determined at Progress Report AND Report Card time. Please keep in mind, when registering your student, that academics will take priority over athletics.

When are practices and games?

The practice schedule for Winter Intramural Soccer is as follows:
