Black Lives Matter at School
Each child, no matter their identity, is shaped by the ways that we treat each other in our community and society. The ideals of Black Lives Matter – including love, respect and real justice for all – are clearly important for ALL children. The thinking and learning inherent in BLM at School is vital all year long, not just for one week. Empathy, kindness and acting for justice are skills that grow with practice, just like math and reading. Our kids are caring, thinking and powerful in what they already can learn and do. They are ready to act to make our society a more just one!
This year, the LHE Parent Equity Group and PTA are partnering with The T Shirt Men Companyto offer LHE Black Lives Matter shirts, hoodies, and masks. The TSM Shop is a small, Black-owned print shop located in Tacoma that does great work for their local community.
Please visit the new shoptoshowyoursupport for Black Lives Matter at Loyal Heights. Deadline to order is January 24. Ordered items will be available for pickup at the school the week of February 1-5. Scholarships are available for students who would like a shirt – please emailKathy Katzen or the Equity Group. For more information on BLM at School and equity efforts at LHE,click here.

Free Online Parenting Event on Mental Illness
PNW Parent Education is a local non-profit that brings the best experts in the nation to speak to our local community on crucial parenting topics. Every quarter, they offer free, high-quality parent education events geared towards families, caretakers, and educators.
The next free online event is on Wednesday, January 27th at 6:30 pm. They have partnered up with the National Alliance on Mental Illness with an early intervention and educational presentation titled, “Ending the Silence: A Youth Mental Health Event”. This relevant and engaging presentation will help attendees identify early signs and symptoms of mental illness in youth, provide information about treatments, and will include a young adult who will share their experience coping with depression and anxiety.
This event is for parents and caregivers, not students. Those who are interested can sign up here.
