PAGE NINE (For Fred Burke)

Well, i was up all night on "The Art of Making Mojos," entering Nagasiva Yronwode's, Katrink Karpetz's, and my own corrections. It's always an eight hour job, and i had just finished the final correx for "Cash Box Conjure," but i knew i could do them back-to-back, because ... because that's what editors do, folks.

I worked steadily through the night on the two matching / not matching sets of correx. Toward the end i was muttering, "I am not hallucinating. I am not hallucinating." I was drinking hot water without tea or coffee in it, just to stay hydrated. Right before sunrise, i knocked over my empty glass water bottle and it smashed into smithereens on the redwood floor, and there was that moment of, "Oh, fuck it. I have to finish this proofreading," and i just let it lay there in shining pieces.

It was like an intercontinental relay race -- Siva woke up at 6:00 AM and contacted the printer in Louiseville, Quebec, to let them know we had a second level of correx for "Cash Box Conjure" -- as Fred and Matthew, in Baltimore, Maryland, rushed in their final correx via pdf for "The Art of Making Mojos." It was a complete re-start from page 1, of course, but such is fate.

At 8:00 AM, Siva picked up the Baltimore correx from my weak and failing hands as i fell into bed, and he got their mark-ups entered into the "Mojos" book while i slept.
I was awoken at 10:00 AM to approve Grey's cover for "Lithomancy," which was fabulously finished by a colourist in Holland named Alissa Van de Vuurst whom Fred met through Fiverr (and, folks, she is GOOD!).

I fell back asleep until 5:00 PM.

Siva soldiered on through the Baltimore correx, which were mostly typographical, thank God, and got the finals on "The Art of Making Mojos" to the printer in shortly after 1:00 PM. He cleaned up the broken shards of glass, unquestioningly. He knows how it is, and that is why i love him.

I woke up, got up, and had a bath, and i am now ready for coffee.

I have never yet, in all the years of these Hoodoo Heritage Festivals and book publishing marathons, gotten to the finish line without one all-nighter. Seventy years old, and i've still got what it takes. Hey, honey, pour me another cup of coffee!
