Summertime is hanging on for dear life. The flowers just keep on blooming at Holy Cow Farm, and last week I enjoyed some of the sweetest corn of the season at Phillips Farms. Meanwhile, Scholl Orchards is experiencing one of their most prolific apple crops in decades! It's looking like the weekend rains will hold off until Saturday afternoon so join us on the riverfront and shop for the best of two seasons.

The number one requested clothing item in shelters is SOCKS. Every Saturday in October, EFM will collect new sock donations at each of our Info Tents. Our goal is to collect 200 pairs of socks for Safe Harbor’s residents and drop-ins. (You can also donate undergarments in any size for any gender.) Let’s make some happy feet this October!

This week let's highlight the Oxheart Pippin apple. You may be asking yourself, what's with these apple names? Each of these unique apple names tells a story- about it's shape, color, size, origin, etc. Oxheart means "heart" shaped or wider at the top with a more narrow base. Pippin (according to Merriam-Webster) means a crisp tart apple having usually yellow or greenish-yellow skin strongly flushed with red and used especially for cooking. And that's exactly what the Oxheart Pippin is- a heart shaped sweet-tart apple with greenish/yellow skin flushed with a pretty red! It's a tasty eating apple but also fabulous for desserts- pies, tarts, crisps or one of our favorites- apple crisp stuffed apples. Check this recipe out- https://www.ihearteating.com/baked-apples-with-oatmeal-streusel-topping/. Lots of customers last week stopped by to pick up a quart of Oxheart Pippins after tasting them at the apple tasting!

You don’t have to be Popeye to enjoy spinach. Fresh local spinach is so much different than what you will find at the grocery store. Although spinach is available year-round, the season for local spinach is the Fall and early Spring when it is the freshest and has the best flavor. Calorie for calorie, spinach (like all leafy dark green vegetables) provides more nutrients than any other food.
Phillips Farms will have plenty of spinach this weekend, as well as these offerings: cauliflower (purple, orange and white), broccoli, winter squash, fennel, leeks, arugula, lettuce, radishes, Jersey tomatoes, corn (last of the season), cucumbers, peppers, brussels sprouts, celery, green beans, carrots, kale, swiss chard, beets, onions, potatoes, garlic, fresh herbs and more. Fruits include Asian Pears and many varieties of sweet crunchy apples. Get there early for their Honeycrisp Apple Cider and fragrant Eucalyptus because they sell out quickly week after week.

Ludacrisp apples arrive this week! What's a Ludacrisp?
According to Ben Scholl, the Ludacrisp has a surprising flavor that seems to change the more you eat. A cross between a Honeycrisp and an unknown second parent, it was bred by the Midwest Apple Improvement Association -- which describes the flavor as tropical and maybe like "Juicy Fruit" chewing gum!
AUTUMN APPLE SPECIALS CONTINUE:
Honeycrisp and Rosalee - 2 half pecks (mix & match) for $20 (regularly $26)
All other apples (mix & match) 2 half pecks for $16 (regularly $20). Varieties include: Gala, Fuji, Jonagold, Crimson Gold, Empire, Macoun, Macintosh, Cortland, and Crimson Crisp.
Scholl's will also be featuring their own applesauce, apple butter and cider donuts (while supplies last).

With this nice warm fall, we are still going strong! We are looking good for this week's market and next. The following one (Oct.30) is a maybe. We can decide by next Wednesday by looking at the extended forecast.
Holy cow! It's been a nice warm fall and the flowers are still coming in strong. Jenn and Bryan plan to be at market for a couple more weeks, and the bouquets are looking gorgeous! There's an abundance of fall colors - fluffy orange marigolds, fragrant green sage, dahlias in so many shades of red. Your flowers can match the changing colors of the forest! Be sure to stop by to pick up some blooms for yourself or a friend!
