Lunch at the Library for kids and teens is now served Monday-Friday, 12-1pm!

Lunch at the Library kicked off this week, providing free lunches for children and teens all summer long thanks to funding from the California State Library.

Kids and teens are invited to join us at the Downtown Library weekdays for lunch, books and engaging activities focused on food, farming and healthy living.

Arrive early on Fridays, beginning June 26, at 11am for Fun Fridays: Fresh Experiences Before Lunch, featuring hands-on programs with farmers, beekeepers, and live animals that bring the journey from farm to table to life.

Summer is our favorite time of year because it gives us the chance to get out into the community and meet you where you are! This weekend, we had a blast connecting with families at the Fire Department Open House and signing up so many kids for the Summer Learning Challenge.

Every outreach event is an opportunity for us to share everything happening at the library this summer—from the Summer Learning Challenge to free programs, performances, and activities for kids, teens and adults.

Juneteenth is this week, and Redwood City is celebrating with a variety of events that honor Black history, culture, resilience, and achievement.

Join the Library for special Juneteenth programs throughout the week, including Free the Curls with author Marissa McGee (Tuesday, 6:30pm, Redwood Shores Branch Library), Juneteenth Printmaking (Wednesday, 6:30pm, Downtown Library Makerspace), Juneteenth: a Historical Perspective and Conversation with Lois Fried (Thursday, 6pm, Downtown Library), and Storytelling and Music with Kirk Waller (Saturday, 11am, Redwood Shores Branch Library). Families can also explore the Threads of Culture art exhibit on display throughout June at the Downtown Libary and Redwood Shores Branch Library.

What's your favorite children's picture book? When the Bay Area Modern Quilting group approached us asking to display an exhibit of quilting squares based on beloved children's books, how could we say no? Drop by the Downtown Library's Family Place to see the quilted pieces this summer. You can also join a Bay Area Modern Quilting meeting on 3rd Saturdays from 1:30-4:30pm at the Downtown Library. On October 7, 2026, Redwood City Library Foundation will host its 5th Annual Upscale Pub Crawl celebrating Banned Books Week. This year’s theme, announced by the American Library Association and Banned Books Week Coalition, is “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read.”

In 2025, the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom reported 4,235 unique titles challenged, just short of the record set in 2023. The Banned Books Week Coalition believes that books are for everyone and that no group should decide what others can read. Books are for everyone. Let Books Be.
