As 2014 starts off, it is rewarding to look back at the year behind us and see the progress we've made, and to look ahead to a whole new year. From nearing completion on major projects, to ongoing school district work and breaking ground on new projects, 2013 was a busy year for all of us at Lundgren.
In the fall, Lundgren attended and exhibited at several school construction industry conferences: the California School Boards Association (CSBA) Annual Education Conference and Trade Show; the California Coalition for Adequate School Housing's (CASH) Fall Conference on School Facilities; and the Community College Facility Coalition's (CCFC) annual conference. We were pleased to attend and exhibit at these conferences, which provide us a great opportunity to meet face-to-face with California education leaders and discuss how Lundgren can help meet future construction and project management needs. It is always very valuable to our clients and Lundgren Management to hear about some of the ways that other Districts are handling the challenges that California school administrators face.

At the CSBA conference, speakers included game designer and futurist Jane McGonigal; Yong Zhao, associate dean for global education at the University of Oregon; and a "State of the State" session on the changing landscape of politics and education. At the CCFC conference, workshops included topics such as public-private partnerships, bond funding and building renewable energy infrastructure. The Fall CASH conference covered everything from the status and implications of new laws and regulations, to the status reports on school maintenance funding and programs. We are looking forward to attending and exhibiting at the annual CASH conference in Sacramento in February.
In addition to the California-based school facilities conferences, Lundgren Management attended the Construction Management Association of America's (CMAA's) National Conference and Tradeshow. Approximately 1,000 construction management industry professionals attended the 2013 conference in Las Vegas. CM leaders from 45 states and six countries took advantage of this unique education and networking opportunity. One of the seminars focused on the CM's role with projects that are being built utilizing an alternative delivery method (i.e. Design Build, Lease-Leaseback, and CM at Risk). The underlying question was, "Is a CM necessary for projects utilizing alternative delivery method?" The seminar provided key points that were outlined by a panel of industry professionals, consisting of the Owner, Contractor and CM, that had experienced a high success rate on projects in which a CM was utilized on a project that was being built using an alternative delivery method.
Attending these conferences provides Lundgren great insight on the issues related to our field and market sector, new legislation that affects the decision making process for our public school districts, as well as letting us connect with representatives from industry professionals and school district personnel throughout the state - both those with whom we've worked with in the past and prospective clients.
In 2013, we also welcomed industry veteran Dan Moore to the Lundgren team as our vice president of operations. With nearly 20 years in executive management, I believe Dan will excel at overseeing all of our projects through all phases of work.
We look forward to a full 2014 at Lundgren Management. We have spent more than 26 years delivering world-class leadership to projects, and that is a tradition we are devoted to preserving.
Newhall School District Projects Move Ahead
Lundgren is responsible for aiding with the planning and management of the pre-construction phase and construction of Measure E bond projects for the Newhall School District. Upon successful completion of planning, design and obtaining approval from the Department of State Architect (DSA), we are currently in the process of soliciting quotes from prospective subcontractors and prepared to start the construction of Valencia Valley and Meadows elementary schools' new classroom buildings.
The Lundgren team is also continuing our pre-construction services for the Newhall Elementary School's new two-story classroom building, which is currently under review by DSA. Concurrently, we have commenced the site work and demolition for the Stevenson Ranch Elementary School restroom building replacement project.
Measure E projects will be constructed utilizing the Lease-Leaseback delivery method, which gives the District the ability to bring the project design team and LLB entity together during the early planning phases and throughout project design.
Lundgren Breaks Ground on Palmdale Project
Lundgren representatives joined Palmdale School District officials in breaking ground on the permanent location for the David G. Millen Intermediate School in October. Lundgren is the construction manager for the $34 million project, which is designed by NTD Architecture. The school will be located at 39221 22nd Street West in Palmdale.
"Lundgren is honored to be involved in the construction of the David G. Millen Intermediate School," said Shawn Fonder, Lundgren's Vice President of Program and Client Services. "This is a cutting-edge school that will provide students an excellent learning environment, and that is just the sort of project we've excelled at for more than 26 years."
The target completion date for the school is August 2015. Set to cover roughly 96,000 square feet, construction of the school is made possible by funds from voter-approved Measure DD. The campus is designed as a courtyard with the facilities surrounding outdoor, multi-purpose space, providing a safe and secure environment for students. The site will include standard, science, music and home economics classrooms, an art lab, computer lab, special education classrooms with flexibility for large group and individual instruction, a library and media center, a gymnasium and physical education center, locker rooms, a multi-purpose room/cafeteria and administrative offices.
The Palmdale School District serves more than 21,000 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, with its intermediate schools serving seventh and eighth grade.
Santa Barbara Project Nears Completion
A very successful end is in sight for our work as construction manager of the modernization of the Arts and Humanities building at Santa Barbara City College. The 14-month project focused primarily on bring the 1970s-era building into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
An elevator tower was added to the building, in addition to changing doors and hardware, adding new restrooms and upgrading ramps.
Lundgren is looking forward to beginning construction on the new West Campus Classroom & Office Building construction during the summer of 2014.

In December, we were a gold sponsor for the Bakersfield City School District Education Foundation's annual Teddy Bear Picnic. The luncheon draws hundreds of people and helps raise funds for classroom grants that can range from $300 to $2,000. We are proud to help support the educators who are teaching future generations of community leaders.
