The Heart of Hope
"Church Family Values"

Good morning, Church!
It's hard to imagine. So far beyond the pale of possibility, it reads like fiction ...
In the summer of 1993, 34 kids showed up for Vacation Bible School at Hope (and I was thrilled)! In the summer of 2018, 4,324 volunteers took part in sharing the everlasting love of Jesus Christ with 9,396 children at Hope's VBS (and now I'm just blown away)! Add to that, the number keeps increasing this week as our newest campus, Hope Ames, wraps up their first ever session of VBS today - growing from 53 kids registered on Monday to, last I heard, 101 by Thursday!
Please don't misunderstand. These big numbers matter only for two reasons:
1)      They glorify God (revealing something only God could accomplish)
2)      They count real kids with real hearts who long to know God ... because children, every single one of them, matter to God.
( Matthew 18:2-3, 21:16, Mark 9:36-37, 10:14-15)
Our culture pushes and pulls children to become high achievers (a virtue that benefits kids in many ways and provides some perfect photo ops on Instagram ... but also comes with a dark side), sometimes to the point where kids get distracted from God and start to lose their souls. So, following Jesus' lead, your church - Lutheran Church of Hope - unapologetically competes for the hearts of thousands of children in this community, one at a time ...
We go all out for VBS. We encourage kids to come to worship and HopeKids every weekend. We offer an outstanding ministry for special needs children called One Body. We have a top-notch Christ-centered preschool and daycare. We carry out uber-effective ministries - PowerLife and Ignition - that connect teens to Jesus.
Why? It's not because it's easy. Phoning in VBS would be way easier than doing it like this. It's because this is the way God calls our church to do church, perhaps articulated best in Hope's five Bible-based core values, starting with the first two: Jesus is life, the rest is just details ... and lost people matter to God, so they necessarily matter to us!
We all (individuals, couples, families, social groups, organizations, businesses, schools, churches) have core values, written or unwritten, formal or informal. They serve as guiding principles for life, and here at Hope our five core values keep us from "going off the rails" as we carry out our mission ... and these core values, as much as anything, reveal the  Heart of Hope!
This weekend, I'll preach at all our services Saturday night and Sunday morning (Hope Ames Campus Minister Danny Housholder will do the same Sunday night) on Hope's Core Values.
Come and see!
Mike Housholder
PS- Hey, kids! Friendly Jesus will be in the Worship Center all weekend! Get your picture taken with him after the service you attend. Then, show your photo to one of our friendly volunteers at the Connect, Grow, Serve tables in the church lobby for a sweet treat!
