The fall season is fast approaching - the first day of fall is September 22! What better time of year is there to spend time outdoors with your canine buddy? There are festivities galore geared specifically for dogs. If your dog loves to swim, there are numerous public pools that will allow your dogs "one last swim" before the pool is shut down for the season. Here is a short list of a few events in the Atlanta area.

Dog Day at the Outdoor Leisure Pool, 9/12 from 1-3:15 PM at the Cumming Aquatic Center

Barkville Dog Rescue's Race for Their Lives 5K, 9/18 at 8 AM, Denmark High School in Alpharetta

Doggie Dip Day, 9/25-9/26, Murphy Candler Park Pool, Brookhaven

Bark in the Park, 9/25 from 10 AM -1 PM at Dog Woods at Coleman Camp Park in Dallas.

International Doodle Dog Day, 9/26 from 1-4 PM at Halcyon Forsyth Shopping Mall in Alpharetta.

Enrichment activity - game #3

This month's enrichment activity is having your dog "hunt" for his food or treats buried in a snuffle mat using his nose!

This is a very easy do-it-yourself project that can be done in an evening once you've got the felt strips cut. Supplies can be found at Home Depot and Walmart. Or, purchase one ready made at Etsy, Amazon or most pet supply stores/websites.

HELP - Puppy nipping / biting

Nipping is one of the top behavioral issues that puppy owners request help with. What is up with those sharp puppy teeth?

Nipping is a normal canine behavior; dogs use their mouths the way we use our hands. Puppies are especially mouthy as they explore their new world. One of the most important things a puppy needs to learn is bite inhibition, which is the ability to mouth without hurting or causing damage. Puppies begin learning bite inhibition by playing with their littermates, which is why it is critically important that they not leave the litter too early. Once they get placed in a human home, it’s up to us to continue this training.
