As Treasurer, I sit on the Board of Trustees for the Public Employees’ Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS). I was honored on June 27th to be elected by the Board to serve as Chair for Fiscal Year 2018. My term began on July 1, 2017.
According to PERS’ latest Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, published in December 2016, PERS defined benefit plans served 399,757 members and 102,212 retirees and beneficiaries in Fiscal Year 2016. It paid out $2.4 billion in retirement benefits that year. I take this responsibility very seriously, as sound stewardship of the PERS program is not only important for the people who work for Mississippi and their families, but for all of our State.
The Board also elected Kelly Breland, Director of the Bureau of Administration at the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, who serves on the Board as a representative of State employees, as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
