State Fair is Right Around the Corner
The Mississippi State Fair is coming up, October 4-15, and our Unclaimed Property staff will be on hand to help reunite you with your money. Our booth in the Trade Mart has always been a popular spot for Fair-goers and I encourage you to stop by if you are at the Fair this year.
This is all part of our aggressive outreach program to help you find your unclaimed property. By developing partnerships and seeking out opportunities to locate owners of unclaimed property, we have been able to reunite people with $75 million in unclaimed property since I took office in January 2012. That’s actually 42% of all the money that has been distributed since the unclaimed property program’s start in 1982.
This is not the State’s money; it is yours. And, I take my responsibility to get it back in your pocket very seriously. If you haven’t looked to see if you have any unclaimed property, I encourage you to search on my website today.
Thanks for the Great Turn-Out at 529 Day
We had a great turn-out at the Mississippi Children’s Museum on September 9 for 529 Day. We were thrilled to give out two $529 MACS (Mississippi Affordable College Savings) scholarships to help these families save for higher education. Echo and I took many pictures with children and parents there to learn about how they can make college more affordable, too. It was a wonderful day and I want to thank our partner, the Mississippi Children’s Museum, and everyone who came out to see us that day for making it such a tremendous success.
Wonderful Opportunity to Speak to SMU Tower Scholars
I had the opportunity last week to speak to the Tower Scholars at Southern Methodist University (SMU). The Tower Scholars program is a highly selective program in public policy and international affairs. It combines opportunities both inside the classroom and outside the classroom to not only give students the knowledge, but also the exposure and experience to become our next generation of leaders. I’m grateful for the invitation by SMU President Gerald Turner.
