Several years ago, the Board of College Savings Mississippi determined that we could meet our dual goals of promoting college savings and jumpstarting people’s savings by hosting events where Mississippians can win scholarships in the Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) program. It has been a tremendous success!
Since we started these promotional events in Fiscal Year 2014, we have given out over $100,000 in scholarships to help Mississippians achieve their higher education dreams. From our annual art contest to our 529 Day baby contest and more, we keep the importance of putting money away for your children’s future on everyone’s minds. This past month, for instance, we held two scholarship contests as official halftime sponsors for the 2017 Egg Bowl and the 2017 MHSAA State High School Football Championships.
And, our College Savings Mississippi account growth has been strong, as well. In fact, we saw a 27 percent increase over 2016 in gross new accounts for September 2017 and contributions to accounts in September 2017 saw a nearly 20 percent increase year-over year.
It is never too early or too late to start saving for your child’s education. If you haven’t looked into opening an account for a child in your life, please review the information on my
