Unclaimed Property Team Partnering with County and Local Leaders This Month
Since I took office in January 2012, we have distributed $97 million in unclaimed property to its rightful owners. This represents more than half of all the money distributed since Mississippi started the program 36 years ago.

A big part of this success has been partnering with state and local leaders to help locate the rightful owners and help reconnect them with their funds, such as at our unclaimed property events around the State. Next month, while the Mississippi Association of Counties and Mississippi Municipal League hold their annual conferences, we will make flash drives available for these elected leaders with unclaimed property lists for their constituents.

We have done this at previous conferences with very positive results and we are hopeful that continuing this partnership, it won’t be long before we have distributed over $100 million! What a great economic stimulus for the State and local economy!

If you are an elected official attending either the MML or the MAS conference in June, please visit my team in the exhibitors’ hall to get your flash drive.

For the seventh consecutive year, College Savings Mississippi will be celebrating September as National College Savings Month with the Mississippi Children’s Museum. So save the date of Saturday, September 7 for College Savings Day at the Museum, here in Jackson.

Echo will be there to take pictures with your kids and our College Savings Mississippi specialists will be there to help answer your questions about saving with MACS (Mississippi Affordable College Savings) or MPACT (Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition). They can even help you open up an account!

Looking forward to Boys State and
Girls State
Speaking to students and encouraging them to pursue their dreams is one of the most rewarding parts of being your Treasurer. This past week, I had the opportunity to speak to the Mississippi NEW Leadership program, sponsored by the Stennis Center. I have spoken to this group of young college women for the past several years and am always impressed by their high level of enthusiasm and commitment to making a difference in their communities.

Later this week, I will go to Ole Miss to speak at the American Legion’s Boys State and a few days later I will travel to the University of Southern Mississippi to speak at Girls State. I appreciate organizations like the American Legion and the Stennis Center investing in our future with these programs and I am grateful to be a part of it each year.
