Come Out to See Echo This Saturday
This Saturday, June 15, Echo and the College Savings Mississippi team will be at the Summer Learning Family Fun Day at the Jackson Convention Complex. The program is organized by MPB, the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi, and Parents & Kids magazine. There will be all kinds of fun activities to help stave off that dreaded “summer slide.”

Research shows that children can lose about two months’ worth of math and reading skills over the summer if they’re not practicing what they’ve learned. This annual event will have fun family activities, like storytelling, art projects, and more to make sure kids are ready to enter the new school year at the top of their game! It will even feature a reading cheer competition between Jackson-area cheer squads!

In addition to getting their picture with Echo, children can come see some of their favorite MPB characters, like Ed Said, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and Curious George. College Savings will have financial literacy activities and of course information for parents to learn how they can save for their children’s education.

Unclaimed Property in Diamondhead on June 27
We are teaming up with Representative Patricia Willis to host two unclaimed property events on the Coast this summer.

Thursday, June 27, 2019
3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Diamondhead Community Center
5300 Country Club Circle, Diamondhead

Thursday, July 11, 2019
3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Lyman Community Center
13472 Highway 49, Gulfport

Just since I took office in January 2012, we have distributed over $97 million in unclaimed property. That’s more than half of all the money distributed over the full 36 years of Mississippi’s unclaimed property program. Events like these make it convenient for individuals and business owners to work with our unclaimed property specialists to find their money and start the claims process.

If you’re in Hancock or Harrison County, we hope you will come out to visit at one of these events. And, you can always check the State’s unclaimed property list at to see if we have any money waiting for you.
Mississippi ABLE Officially Launches This Week
This morning, I was proud to stand with my fellow ABLE Board members to officially launch this great savings program for Mississippians living with disabilities.

ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) was passed by Congress in 2014. It is modeled on 529 college savings programs and allows individuals with disabilities and their families the opportunity to save for education, housing, medical, job training, and other important services. It offers tax advantages to stretch a family’s savings dollar and the money saved doesn’t impact important public benefits, like Medicaid and Social Security disability.

The program is run through the states and Mississippi adopted it in 2017. I am part of the 9-member board that has been responsible for setting the program up. And, this month, we are registering individuals across the State for the very first Mississippi ABLE accounts. Come learn more and see a demonstration for registering online at one of these kick-off events:
