Lyon Families,
We are off to a great start for the 2019-2020 school year. With many new faces around Lyon, teachers and staff have been working to build a culture and community through 7 Habits lessons, games, and cooperative learning activities.
We kicked off our first whole building activity with our monthly assembly on Wednesday. Students reviewed expectations, practiced celebrations, and built excitement around Lyon's 1st ever PTO Fun Run!
To stay in the loop of exciting activities happening each month at Lyon please read classroom newsletters, visit Lyon's Facebook page, attend monthly assemblies, and monitor the website.
Thank you for helping us have a positive start to this school year. Please let us know if we can assist your child in any way.
Sincerely,
Casey Mitchell, principal
Leanne Gove, assistant principal

Republic School District is implementing a new visitor management system that will help us electronically record and check the sex offender registry for anyone who visits and accesses our school buildings. If you plan to visit our schools for class parties, as a guest speaker, volunteer, to have lunch with a student, contractor, etc.
you'll need to bring with you a state issued picture ID as a way to check in with our front offices.
We are excited about implementing this system as it helps us continue our focus of creating a safe and secure learning environment for our students and employees.

What I Need Time (WIN Time)
Each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:35-9:05am Lyon students will participate in What I Need Time (WIN time). During this time students will be placed in grade level groups to focus on skills they need in order to master grade level standards. Students who have mastered these skills will be challenged with standards from the next grade level.
These groups are fluid and data from pre and post tests will be utilized to identify misconceptions your child may have. The intention is to meet each learner where he/she is, fill in any gaps within the learning, and build on this knowledge to solidify the learning.

Update: Birthday Snack Information
At the August 15 Board of Education meeting board policy ADF (district wellness policy) was discussed. The conversation mainly centered around one component of the policy which states that the district will follow USDA Smart Snacks for celebrations and birthdays for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. After much discussion, the Board has asked the district to "pause" on the implementation of requiring that birthday and celebration treats meet USDA Smart Snack requirements. During this time the Board has requested that district administration and health services department investigate what is mandated by the state and federal government regarding this component of policy ADF. Administration will provide the Board of Education with this information and possible alternatives for review. During this review period the district will implement policy ADF as it did during the 2018-19 school year. Therefore, it will not be necessary to consult the USDA Smart Snack requirements until further notice.
