General Health Screenings

General health screenings consist of vision, hearing, and height and weight. These noninvasive routine screenings will be conducted starting in September 2022 . If you do not wish for your child to participate in these routine screenings, please notify Nurse LIsa in writing.

Lyon Leadership Expectations

During the first week of school students participated in Passport Day, where they traveled to different areas of the building to learn Lyon Leadership Expectations. These are expectations for personal and academic behaviors that will help everyone at Lyon to live our mission of Lead, Love, Learn. This week we held a Leadership Kickoff Assembly, with special guests the Stunt Dudes. They spoke with students about the importance of living our mission to not only be successful at school, but in life. They also performed some pretty cool BMX stunts!

Lyon FEMA Shelter

As a district, it is our primary focus to keep our students and staff safe while at school. At Lyon Elementary, the FEMA Safe Room located next door at Sweeny Elementary will allow us to do just that in the event of severe storms. On a daily basis, this facility serves as Sweeny’s gymnasium, but also has another very important purpose. This facility will serve as our official sheltering location during tornadic weather.

In the case of inclement weather during school hours, this facility will be used by Sweeny students and staff along with Lyon Elementary students and staff. It has been designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 250 mph, which is equivalent to an EF5 tornado. Also, it was built to withstand various flying debris and the “missile-impact” that often occurs during bad storms.

The district has worked hard to develop a strong relationship with the National Weather Service and also Republic Emergency Management. These two entities assist the district in determining evacuation routes and sheltering locations all across the district. Students and staff are required to do drills on a regular basis to practice such evacuation and sheltering procedures. This helps everyone know the exact plan of action in a time of emergency.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact our building administration or Central Office. For more information, go to: https://conta.cc/3PQGN0J

Safety and Security

Our district has system-wide security measures in place to ensure a safe environment for all students and staff. At our building, our district and building leaders have implemented the following protocols in partnership with our School Police:

  • There are multiple School Resource Officers who visit each elementary building multiple times a day.

  • All exterior doors remain locked.

  • Every visitor is screened before entering through a secure vestibule at the front entrance.

  • Every building is monitored through video surveillance inside and outside.

  • Emergency operations plans are reviewed and updated during the summer months and throughout the school year.

Any parent or staff member with concerns about school safety can contact building leaders or our Director of School Police, Scott Umbarger, at 417-732-3605 ext. 6200
