Message from the Division President

Dear M&D members,

The 2025 IISE Annual Conference begins in less than a month. May is a busy month in our division. The M&D Track committee is finalizing sessions. Presenters and panelists are preparing their presentations. The M&D Board is finishing its term whilst transitioning to the next Board. This Is my final newsletter as your M&D President. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve you. I wish much success to your next President, Dr. Hannah Budinoff, as she leads the M&D Division during the 2025-2026 term.

Change and volunteerism were two themes this term. The term began with new by-laws that reduced board terms; added the M&D Track Chair as a Board position; and revised our presidential succession. Those changes provided more opportunities for members to personally invest in making M&D stronger. You – the M&D members – responded in mass. More than 184 M&D volunteers contributed to the success of this term. That includes 9 Board members; 5 M&D Track Committee members; 44 conference paper reviewers: all 6 M&D award committees having at least 3-4 members; 3 webinars/podcasts; and 10 Town Hall sponsors. With each new term, we experience change and renewal. Both are vital to the health of IISE. I encourage all M&D members to invest yourselves and contribute to the continuing growth of our division.

The Annual Conference will begin in a few weeks. This newsletter provides a M&D Track preview. Over 115 presenters and panelists will share in our sessions and workshop. Presentations celebrate the work and contributions of others. Your attendance in sessions is an acknowledgement of their efforts and the work of the M&D Track Committee. Engage with each other to connect, share, learn and grow. Be a part of the M&D Town Hall Meeting. In it, we will recognize others, celebrate this term, and formally transition the division to the 2025-2026 M&D Board. Through the generosity of donations, we will again have refreshments during the meeting.

There is still time to register for the 2025 Annual Conference: https://iise.org/Annual/ When the conference is not in session, take time to enjoy the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Regards,

David Vance, PE

2025 Manufacturing & Design Track

The Manufacturing and Design (M&D) Division of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE) is sponsoring the M&D Track at the IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2025. The conference is a forum for exchanging knowledge and discoveries in the Industrial and Systems Engineering research and practitioner communities. The IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2025 will continue to integrate research and industry applications under one conference.

Pre-Conference workshop

Hands-on Training: Cyber-Informed Engineering to Secure Industrial Control Systems

Cybersecurity is a critical factor in industrial control systems (ICS), and cyber-informed engineering (CIE) is the key to securing operations. In this hands-on training session, participants will apply 12 core CIE principles while launching simulated cyberattacks in a virtual lab environment. The training features realistic industrial scenarios, including simulated power and chemical plant operations, and experimentation with Modbus, a widely used industrial networking protocol. Cybersecurity Education for Engineers: Action for Cyber Resiliency

Join our dynamic panel of academic and industry leaders for an essential conversation on embedding cyber-physical resilience into the design and operation of critical industrial environments, such as manufacturing and energy sectors. Industry experts will illuminate key lessons from major industrial cybersecurity incidents while academic thought leaders share cutting-edge research, educational insights, and impactful industry-academia collaborations.

Achieving Zero Incidents: The World Class Manufacturing Safety Approach

The World Class Manufacturing (WCM) methodology has been widely adopted across industries to drive cost savings and efficiency improvements. The WCM safety pillar embraces a ZERO mindset, meaning the ultimate goal is zero safety incidents. This tutorial will explore the WCM safety pillar’s methodology, tools, and real-world applications within the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry, offering practical insights into this structured and effective approach to safety management.

Manufacturing USA Institutes Panel

As the U.S. manufacturing sector faces increasing global competition, workforce transitions, and rapid technological change, cross-sector collaboration has never been more critical. This panel will explore how national manufacturing institutes, industrial partners, and government agencies are working together to accelerate innovation, strengthen domestic supply chains, and translate cutting-edge research into real-world manufacturing solutions.
