Modernist News

On Tuesday November 28, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission will vote regarding the proposed designation of Paul Rudolph's Modulightor Building as a New York City landmark. The building is significant as a culmination of Paul Rudolph's ideas about modern architecture and his response to its short-comings. It was home to Rudolph's architectural practice while he designed some of the most interesting projects during his career.


Reach out to the Landmarks Preservation Commission and state your strong support for the Modulightor Building becoming a New York City Landmark at [email protected]. Please copy the letter to the Institute's office. More Information about the public hearing.

Concerning the 1958 John and Ann Straus Residence designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, proposals are currently before the Pound Ridge NY Planning Board for a renovation which will gut the existing house, erasing much of the original design.

In Rancho Mirage CA, the harsh desert environment has taken a toll on the kitschy but lovable Rancho Super Car Wash pink elephant sign. It was recently designated by the City as historic. Our good friends at Preservation Mirage are undertaking a full restoration, and you can learn more and donate here.

Preservation easements are like a homeowner's association for just one house and are the only legally enforceable way in most jurisdictions to keep a Modernist house from being destroyed in the future.


National Register status? Famous architect? Local historic designation or tax credits? At best, these things may delay demolition six months to a year but they won't stop it. The City of Livonia MI signed the death warrant for the Gunnar Birkerts-designed Alfred Noble Library after finding too much mold and water damage in 2019. An ongoing community effort has put the demolition on hold.

There is a 1955 Eichler home that A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons designed iin Sacramento CA for sale for $800,000.

Near Zion National Park in Utah, LA architecture firm Woods+Dangaran is designing a three-house development to fit into the rocky landscape.

I.M. Pei's Brutalist dormitories at New College and Victor Lundy's commercial Waldman Building are two of the structures on the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation's Six to Save list for this year.

Philip Johnson called the Wolf House overlooking the Hudson River in Newburgh NY "the worst house I ever built," and over time his work was pretty much hidden by renovations. New owners did a restoration.

The Architect's Newspaper celebrates its 20th anniversary noting remarkable events and buildings, beginning with the Louisiana Purchase in 1883 and the construction of numerous Modernist buildings.

A gallery exhibit in Lincoln in the UK celebrates the architecture and other accomplishments of Sam Scorer, who was described as "Lincolnshire's true renaissance man." He died in 2003.

A 2014 house designed by Alderstudio Architecture in Austin TX is listed for $12.5M.

Available January 2024: Since founding his practice BCHO Architects Associates in Seoul in 1994, Byoung Cho has built a reputation as the key architect driving the expansion of one of the world’s most densely populated cities. Influenced by Korea’s rich aesthetic tradition, Cho utilizes understated forms to create serene buildings that yield powerful and subtle experiences for their inhabitants. This book presents twenty-nine portraits of the buildings and districts of Seoul that have most influenced Cho, from a 12th-century shrine to a 14-metre-square concrete box, and includes a number of his own designs. Thursday, January 11, 5-7pm. Leading by Design Exhibition Thirst4Architecture, Gregg Museum, Raleigh NC. NC State’s School of Design became a reality in September 1948 and rapidly gained a reputation as one of the top design schools in the nation. The most progressive school of architecture and allied arts in the South, it served as a hub of Modernist creativity. Led by Henry Kamphoefner, the school rocketed to fame in just a few years, with Frank Lloyd Wright himself visiting in 1950.



Over wine and appetizers, you'll see the remarkable exhibition Leading by Design on the school’s 75-year legacy showcasing artworks from the Gregg Museum’s permanent collection created by faculty past and present. Free, registration required.

North Carolina Realtors and owners of NC Modernist houses can now list - for sale or for rent - on our free NCModernist database. Listings limited to detached single family Modernist houses, old or new, and the house must be in North Carolina. Details.
