At Telrad Connegy they are aware of this issue and have designed their system to avoid it.  Telrad's Evergreen policy ensures that you can always salvage your investment  and keep most of your equipment when you upgrade.  At MTL, we have numerous customers with up-to-date systems who still use components purchased over a decade ago, such as Telrad's series 10 and 20 phones.  In fact, anyone who has purchased a Telrad system since the early 1990's would never have had to make a significant investment in upgrading it.
