In 1972, there were just over 400,000 women-owned businesses in the United States. Today, there are more than 13 million and counting women-owned businesses in the country.
Meet Ana Diaz, owner of Diaz Electric of New York Inc., a #CityCertified Minority and Woman-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) that provides professional electrical services.

M/WBE Citywide Procurement Fair | |
SBS recently hosted the Annual Citywide Procurement Fair at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. This year was our most-attended event to date with close to 1,300 M/WBEs in attendance to show they are “Ready for Business.”
Key highlights from the day include:

Opening remarks from First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, SBS Commissioner Kevin D. Kim, and Chief Business Diversity Officer Michael Garner announcing a record-breaking $6 billion awarded by City agencies and affiliated entities to M/WBEs in fiscal year 2023.
- 90 exhibitors including City and State agencies, financial lenders, and other public and private partners.

All employers are required to report their new and newly re-hired independent contractors working in New York State to the New York New Hire Online Reporting Center. Reporting by the employer is required if the independent contractor is a direct hire and earns more than $2,500.
Employers are encouraged to report all independent contractors regardless of contract amount. Reporting is required within 20 calendar days of hire. State law allows a penalty for not reporting in a timely manner.
