Dear MAPC Community:

On April 1, 2023, An Act to Reduce Traffic Fatalities went into effect to protect vulnerable road users in Massachusetts. This law includes a provision that requires that motorists passing cyclists must maintain at least four feet between their vehicle and the bike rider. To learn more, we recommend checking out the great resources that MassBike has available here.

Under this law, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is required to provide and maintain signage across the Commonwealth to remind motorists to maintain at least four feet from bikers.

MassDOT is encouraging cities/towns to connect with them about how many signs they would like.

While the deadline to request signs was today, June 1, MassDOT will still accept requests over the next week or so.

MassDOT will deliver the signs to your city/town, however, you need to let them know as soon as possible how many you need and which available sizes. You can express your interest through their Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). We have provided a link to a copy of it below; please download a copy of it to complete it. MassDot also provided a one page document of helpful information which we have also provided a copy of below.

According to MassDot, you can submit your completed and signed MOA to Ranjit Sivasubra ([email protected]). If you have any questions, please reach out to Ranjit directly.
