WE'RE MOVING!
MAB Offices Closed Thursday and Friday, April 19-20!

Over the past couple of months, your MAB staff has been busy packing up offices and doing some spring cleaning/purging in preparation for a move to short-term headquarters, located just across the parking lot from our long-time home.   Our hope is that construction of our new permanent home will be completed within 18 months.

As a result of this move, our temporary address, beginning April 23, will be:

There will be no changes to our phone number or other contact information.

FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai to Speak at Summer Conference!

The MAB has confirmed this week that FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai will be appearing at this year's summer Advocacy Conference and Annual Meeting, August 13-14 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.

MAB is Collecting Nominations for 2018
Hall of Fame/Lifetime Achievement Awards
Nominations are now being taken for the 2018 Michigan Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Awards. This year's honorees will be recognized at the Advocacy Conference & Awards Banquet on August 13 and 14 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. FEMA Releases 2017 IPAWS/EAS National Test Report

FEMA has released the results of the September 27, 2017 National EAS Test.  The agency reports that overall results were similar to 2016 with improvements in most areas.  Read More

Rick Snyder_150 Snyder Signs Record Management Legislation
Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation into law that amends the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to clarify that The State Police would not have to produce reports from its Statewide Records Management System unless it created those reports.  Read More

Part-Time Legislature Effort Falls Short
Supporters of the proposal to move Michigan to a part-time legislature stated that the petition fell about 20,000 signatures short of the required minimum.  Read More

FCC Opens Settlement Window for Mutually Exclusive Applicants in Second Translator Window for AMs Seeking FM Translators
According to David Oxenford's Broadcast Law Blog, the FCC released a Public Notice announcing a window for mutually exclusive applicants filed in the second translator window to attempt to resolve the interference conflicts that the FCC found to exist between certain applications.  Read More

DHS to Compile Database of Journalists
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wants to track journalists, bloggers and other "media influencers" through a database. The DHS's "Media Monitoring" plan would give the contracting company "24/7 access to a password protected, media influencer database, including journalists, editors, correspondents, social media influencers, bloggers etc."  Read More

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has announced the 10 winners of the Crystal Radio Awards. Included is WWJ-AM (Detroit), the Entercom-owned all-news station.   Read More

Midwestern Broadcasting Hosts Industry Night for Technical Students
Midwestern Broadcasting (Traverse City) General Manager Chris Warren reports that like in the industry, they've been searching for engineering talent for several years with little luck. So the company decided to host a "happy hour" themed event for area youth and young adults enrolled in computer-networking/engineering classes at local Northwestern Michigan College and Traverse City High School Vocational programs.  Read More

WOMC-FM (Detroit), which recently announced the arrival of former WXYZ-TV anchor Stephen Clark, has now announced a new morning show: "WOMC Mornings With Stephen Clark and JoAnne Purtan."   Read More

Northern Michigan TV Station Named Nationwide "Station of the Year"
WMNN-LD (Lake City-Cadillac), MI News 26, Michigan's only 24/7 local news channel, was named LPTV Station of the Year and took home three additional national awards at the annual National Association of Broadcasters Expo -- known as NAB Show -- in Las Vegas this week.

WWMN-FM (Thompsonville) Sold from One Mitten to Another 
Todd Mohr's Mitten Media, LLC has filed an application with the FCC to sell its WWMN-FM (Thompsonville) to Mitten News, LLC for $275,000.  Mitten News, LLC is owned by Jon Yob and also operates WJML-AM (Petoskey) and WJML-AM (Kingsley).   Read More

MSU Asks Broadcasters to Fill Out Survey on Voice Disorders
The Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at Michigan State University has asked Michigan's radio and television stations for their assistance with a study on work-related conditions associated with voice disorders among broadcasters. Read More

Dish Network Teams with Sinclair, Nexstar on ATSC 3.0 Test
In a significant convergence of wireless and broadcast technologies, DISH Network has successfully trialed the transmission and reception of the new broadcast ATSC 3.0 standard as part of the Spectrum Consortium, LLC's (Spectrum Co.'s) "Next Gen" deployment project in Dallas, Texas. Using its 700 MHz E Block spectrum (former broadcast TV channel 56), DISH deployed on Spectrum Co.'s Garland, Texas, Single Frequency Network (SFN) site, as part of the country's first major market conversion to the Next Gen broadcast standard. WCMU Public Media has announced that WCMZ-TV (Flint) will sign off permanently on April 23, 2018 at 11:59 p.m.  WCMZ was sold in the FCC Spectrum Auction in early 2017.
