DEADLINES
June 30:  Deadline for radio stations to move from AMC-8 to AMC-18 (see article below).

July 1: Captioning Deadline.  Television stations must be captioning clips of live or near-live TV programming used on their websites or mobile apps. This applies to all Full Power or Class A TV stations.

July 10:  Issues/Programs List for Q2-2017 due in Public Inspection File. 

July 10:  Children's Television Reports Due.  Records showing compliance with commercial limits on Children's Television Programming during Q2-2017 must be included in station's public inspection files.  Also, Children's Television Programming Reports for Q2-2017 must be filed with the FCC and included in the station's public inspection files.

July 10:  Class A Television Station Documentation Due.  Documentation of Class A Television continuing eligibility should be included in station's public inspection files on this date.

Linda Lee To Receive MAB Legacy Award

Linda Lee (Young) of WYCD-FM (Detroit) and nationally recognized radio personality, will receive the first MAB Legacy Award, posthumously, at the Advocacy Conference and Annual Meeting, August 22, during the Chairman's Banquet at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville. Read more here...

Reminder:  AMC-8 Cutoff is June 30

Radio stations airing programming from any of the major network suppliers only have until June 30 to shift their satellite dishes from AMC-8 to the new AMC-18 satellite, at 105 degrees West Longitude.   Read more here...


SiriusXM Seeks EAS Waiver

On June 5, SiriusXM Radio filed a petition with the FCC asking for a temporary waiver with regard to how the company complies with Emergency Alert System requirements on some of its programming channels. Read more here...

State of Michigan Legislative Update 

Medical Marijuana Advertising Ban Introduced

Lawmakers in both the House and the Senate introduced legislation to ban billboard advertising for medical marijuana. Senator Rick Jones (R-24) and Representative Andy Schor (D-68) said in a press release that the legislation is in line with similar bans on tobacco billboard advertising.  Read more here...


Part-Time Legislature Petition Cleared by the Bureau of Elections

After initial uncertainty over possible defects in the petition language for the part-time legislature proposal, the Bureau of Elections is now satisfied that Lt. Governor Brian Calley's part-time legislature petition meets the "technical requirements" in state law.  Read more here...

Court Rejects Request to Stay UHF Discount

According to a report in TVNewsCheck, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit denied the emergency stay motion filed by public interest groups that sought to prevent the FCC from implementing its decision to reinstate the so-called UHF discount that the groups claim will "make it easier for the nation's largest television ownership groups to acquire additional stations and crowd out diverse and local voices."    Read more here...

Andrea Isom Joins WXYZ/WMYD-TV

Reporter Andrea Isom has joined WXYZ-TV and WMYD-TV (Detroit) as a reporter and 7 Action News Investigator. Recently, Isom was an on-air correspondent and video production producer on the nationally syndicated show "Crime Watch Daily." She traveled the country telling in-depth, high-profile stories about truth, crime and justice. Read more here...


Erin Vermeulen Joins WCSX Morning Show

Beasley Media Group has announced that Erin Vermeulen will be joining Big Jim O'Brien as the newest member of the WCSX-FM (Detroit) morning team.  She will begin her new position on July 10.  Read more here...


Alex Jokich Rejoins WWTV-WWUP

After nearly five years as a reporter at WWMT-TV (Kalamazoo), Alex Jokich has rejoined WWTV/WWUP-TV (Cadillac) as Morning News Anchor.  She will anchor the 4:30 -9:00 a.m. news segments where she was previously a reporter.  Read more here...


WBCT Birthday Bash Turns 25

This past weekend (June 17-18) iHeartMedia's WBCT-FM/B-93 (Grand Rapids) held its 25th annual Birthday Bash country music concert at US-131 Motorsports Park near Martin, Michigan.  The two-day music concert is considered one of the biggest draws for country music fans in the Midwest.  Read more here...


Caroline Beasley Elected As NAB Joint Board Chair

Caroline Beasley, CEO, Beasley Media Group, has been unanimously elected as NAB Joint Board Chair by the NAB Joint Board of Directors. Beasley takes over from Dave Lougee, president and CEO of TEGNA Media, whose term expired.  Read more here...

Mathew Treadwell joined the MAB team as Marketing & Communications Manager on June 19. Michigan Nexstar Employees Give Back with "Day of Giving"

On June 16, The Nexstar-owned television stations in Michigan, WOOD-TV (Grand Rapids), WLNS-TV (Lansing) and WJMN-TV (Marquette) joined 168 other Nexstar stations nationwide for the company's annual "Founder's Day of Caring," where company employees donate a half-day to a local non-profit or community agency.   Read more here...
