DHS Site Access Letters for Michigan Broadcasters

On March 19, the MAB distributed letters to stations from the Department of Homeland Security's Cyber-Security and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).  The letters are a precaution with the current COVID-19 emergency and grants broadcasters access to studio and transmitter facilities in the event of a shelter-in-order or road closures. One letter addresses access, the other letter addresses fuel.  Read More

FCC Chairman Commends Broadcasters' Coronavirus Response, Calls for Further Action

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai held a conference call yesterday with television and radio broadcasters and broadcaster trade associations to thank broadcasters for their efforts to educate the American people about the coronavirus pandemic and discuss additional ways that broadcasters can help Americans stay safe and informed during the coronavirus outbreak.  Read More 

FCC Announces Repack Deadline Relief
Michigan TV broadcasters moving in Phase 9 or 10 of the repack take note.  In response to a request from NAB, the FCC has agreed to allow any station currently scheduled for Phase 9 of the repack to move to Phase 10 as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. If stations in Phase 9 would still like to transition at this time, they may do so.  Read More 

FCC's 2018 Abolition of Main Studio Rules Means Broadcast Studios Do Not Need to Be Open to the Public During Coronavirus Outbreak

We've heard that some broadcasters are worried about staffing their main studios and allowing the public to visit the studios in this period where the government and health authorities have called for social distancing. Update: March 25 Statewide EAS Required Monthly Test
At the request of MAB's Dan Kelley, the State of Michigan will not be airing a specially-scripted "Severe Weather Awareness Week" EAS RMT on Wednesday, March 25.  This is due to the continuing COVID-19 emergency.  It was felt that the language may alarm an already stressed public.  Read More

Scheduling has begun for the 2020 Alternative Broadcast Inspection Program (ABIP). The MAB conducts these alternative inspections regionally from April to October.  Learn More

Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters (MAPB) television stations are offering up their 24-hour PBS KIDS channels and have special tips for parents about how to keep children learning while schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Radio and television stations in Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Lansing were named the best in the state in the annual Michigan Associated Press Media Editors broadcast competition.  Read More

Jim 'JJ' Johnson Named WOMC Morning Co-Host
Entercom Detroit's WOMC-FM has announced that Jim "JJ" Johnson has been named morning show co-host.  Johnson returns to his morning show roots where he will join JoAnne Purtan as co-host of "JJ and JoAnne," weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Johnson will also continue serving as the station's midday show host, weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Read More

Larry Smith Passes
Longtime Michigan broadcaster and former MAB Board Member Larry Smith passed away unexpectedly in Rocky Mount, N.C., on March 14.  He was 74.  Smith was born in Port Huron, Mich., on June 9, 1945, son of the late Charles and Marian (Cook) Smith. He married Kathleen Marie Smith on March 28, 1981, in Port Huron Read More
