It's Tax Time!
With tax day right around the corner, many of us are searching far and wide for any deductions we can get.
Is your dollar to MABTR tax deductible or not?
Ask yourself... did you receive something in return for that dollar?

How Can I Teach My Kids the Best Way to Interact With a Dog?
It can be an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience - introducing a child to a new dog. Whether the new addition is permanent within your own family; or you are expecting guests with dogs and you want your kids to know how to act; OR maybe you are taking your kids to visit family that has a dog, but your family doesn't.
We hope the below graphics will present some simple tips of Dos and Don'ts.
As always, feel free to contact us with any success stories you've had using these tips, or other things you've tried that worked! We'd love to share with our friends in our rescue community.
Adoptable Dog of the Month
My name is
I am 11 years old and weigh 14 pounds. I need a new home because I was found as a stray. I am being fostered in Higginsville, MO.
I am a sweet little older lady that is like velcro to the person I love. I love to snuggle on the couch in blankets with you. I also like to play with stuffed toys. I enjoy being outside and surprise people when I chase birds. I need to sleep in bed with you because I don't like to be by myself all night long in a crate.

Q: How can I get my dog to take his medication which he needs to get better?
A: Not every dog owner is blessed with a dog who looks at everything as a tasty treat. Try not to force pills down your dog's throat as it will just make the task harder.
Below are a few tips to getting pills/liquid into your dog
- Wrap the pill up in cheese slices or push them into the end of wieners/hot dogs
- You can also smash the pill between two spoons to form a powder which can be mixed with gravy or wet food
- Use pill poppers which are formed pouches
- Coat the pill in a thin layer of butter
- Capsules can be broken open and placed in wet food or moist treats, to better hide the taste.
- Liquids can be dripped into gravy, drizzled over sausages, or even mixed in the water bowl if they are the tasteless type. You can use an eye dropper inserted behind the last tooth in your dog's closed mouth.
Alumni Feature - Ace
"October 11th will always be a
day for the books in our
household - it's the day that
we brought home the best
thing that has ever happened
I told my husband when we
were dating that my
non-negotiable in life would be that I had to have a dog - and a Boston Terrier. He said ok, even though he is allergic, but it had to be a Big Boston. So, when the time was right, we were married and bought a house with a fenced in yard. I began searching for a rescue in the area that would adopt to South Dakota. I found Ace (formerly Butch). His ever-so-sweet face captivated me and I sent my husband a picture. He replied "Yeah, let's get him! How many pounds is he?" I replied, "He's perfect, he is 26 pounds!" and then began our next conversation. I texted back "He's deaf, but we can do it!" and the doubt settled in on both parties.
After days of going back to the MABTR site, praying about it, doing research and reading about how to train and take care of a deaf dog, talking to family about it (because we knew it would not be just us that was going to help raise Ace), we came to the nervous conclusion that WE COULD DEFINITELY DO IT! I filled out the form and not even 24 hours got a phone call from his foster mom!! I was shaking I was so excited. Even after some things that she told us, because MABTR is completely honest with their potential adopters, we set a date to go pick him up and bring him to his furever home!
Adopting Ace was the best thing that we have ever done and we strive daily to provide him the life that he deserves. He sure is spoiled! He now knows sign language for sit, stay, laydown, shake, roll over (although, he is a serious diva about it), and bye-bye. He is the biggest cuddler and he loves us so much. Ace is going to be a big brother to a human in Spring 2016! We tested him around an infant and he did fabulous, wanted to lick to baby, be around it everywhere it went, and even tried to snuggle with it. He was so gentle and we are ecstatic and thrilled that he is going to be the best big brother doggie around!!
A HUGE THANKS to MABTR and Lela and Nicki for bringing Ace into our lives-he truly is the best thing that has ever happened to us - until this Spring, then he will be the FIRST best thing to ever happened to us as we welcome a second best thing into our family
We are furever thankful!

Many states are experiencing extremely cold weather and our pets are in danger
-EXPECT ACCIDENTS - Try walking out ba
refoot and stand in one spot to go pee.
-Consider other locations for potty breaks such as your garage
-Allow multiple trips outside to finish their job. IF THEY WANT BACK IN LET THEM IN.
-Have them wear a coat or sweater - clothing can stay on even inside. If your dog is panting they are overheating and to remove all clothing
-Create a path that has no snow or ice
*Speak out if you see a pet left in the cold

Planning your pets future without you
In so many cases the pets are overlooked after something unexpectedly happens to the owner.
MABTR wants you to be proactive to ensure the continued safety and happiness for your four legged friend after you are gone.
It's not enough that a friend or relative verbally promised to take in your pet(s) or even that you've decided to leave money to them for that purpose. Work with an attorney to draw up a special will or trust to provide for the care and ownership of your pet as well as the money necessary to care for them.
MABTR gets calls from relatives all the time that the owner passed and no one is wanting to take in their boston in.
We get calls from shelters that the owner passed and there was no one to call to take their boston in.
I could not nor do I want to imagine that my boston would no longer be cared for or loved once I am gone.
