January 2015
MABTR is excited to start a new year. 2014 brought us new rewards, challenges, and new friends and fans.

We could not saved the 329 lives we did without all of you.  Thank you!!

We are proud to state that we rescued 103 puppy mill survivors in 2014. That is 31% of our intake.
MABTR prides itself on the ability to give commercial breeder (puppy mill) dogs a second chance at life.

Whether it is....

-donating $5 or $100 or a harness

-transporting a dog from Des Moines, IA to Kansas City, MO or to a vet appointment

-babysitting a dog for a night til his next leg of his transport or a foster opens up

-fostering a dog for two weeks or two months

-spreading the word to friends and family to ADOPT, Don't shop

-adopting a new forever friend

...All these acts of kindness and more allow us to make a difference in the lives of these precious bostons.

Below is the 2014 Financial Report.

What is there to know..
2015 Goals for MABTR

With every successful organization there are goals to achieve. MABTR's family will continue to grow and accomplish the following goals in 2015

  1. Build our foster home and babysitter base in St Louis, MO, Kansas City, MO, Springfied, MO, and Des Moines, IA areas as our intakes have increased in these areas. Without foster homes we cannot save lives. MABTR does not board their dogs for any period of time.
  2. With a new event coordinator in St Louis we want to improve our attendance at local events.
  3. Strengthen our relationship with local pet partner Petco and the Petco Foundation.
  4. Continue to find new and exciting ways to raise money.  For example MO will be holding the first MABTR Bingo Night in January.
  5. Increase our Facebook fan base to 10,000 plus.
  6. Increase our online appearance by having an active Twitter account
  7. Roll out the Constant Contact software to all email communication to ensure the correct audience is receiving the proper message based on their state and interest.
    1. to update your email profile with us click here
  8. Fill the following open positions:
    1. Newsletter Editor - lead the effort in designing and writing the monthly online newsletter The Boston Times.
    2. Application Filer - create and run a process that will follow up with all applicants that were passed on a specific dog they requested.  This allows applicants to know the status of their application shared with the foster parent of the dog they wanted to learn more about.
    3. Event Communicator - write the email messages for each scheduled event across CO, MO and NE with the assistance of the event coordinators.

(if you have an interest in one of these positions please email luckypawpals@aol.com for additional details)

Adoptable Dog of the Month
My name is Spunky. I am a 10 year old boston MIX and weigh 12 pounds. I need a new home because I was unclaimed from a shelter. I am being fostered in MN.

I am a very happy and silly little lady. I love having stuffed animals and tennis balls to play with. I'm kennel trained but also love being under the covers, too. I get really excited when I see a big dog because I want to go say Hi and play.
I don't like other dogs by me when I'm eating and will growl so they give me my space. But I'm not mean about it, I just want to eat in peace.
I love giving lots of kisses and a warm lap to lay on.
Foster mom says that I am the happiest little dog with my tail always wagging and lots of smiles.

Ask Jennifer
Q: My dog eats fast and sometimes gorges his food, how can I change this habit?
A: Feed him on a flat surface (i.e. the floor or a plate). This way he is forced to pick up each piece where now he is probably using the side of the bowl to cup the food.
Alumni Feature
Frankie came into my life while on a walk with his foster family in Moorhead MN he was so excited to meet me, and I had to have him. The two weeks or so that followed my first encounter I could not remember the name of the rescue and I frantically searched the streets hoping to find frank and his foster family out for a walk, and just when I thought I would never find them I did. I filled out the adoption papers and went from there.

It took Frankie a while to adjust, but soon his personality began to shine. He loves to go for rides in the car and walking when the weather is warm enough. And boy is he a talker in the mornings.

I could not have found a happier, more mild tempered dog than Frankie. He loves people and children and he has a big personality to go with it.  He has taken over a big part of my couch and loves to snuggle in the bed

I cannot imagine life without Frankie.  I sit and wonder how someone could have let go of him. Frankie is my other son, not just a dog. He is family and I hope with our love he can live a long happy life ... and believe me if I had more room he would have a boston buddy. - Brad F

Does your dog have Arthritis?

Arthritis is caused by the breaking down of smooth cartilage that covers and protects the bones that form a joint. Once the bones are exposed, painful wear and tear can occur.

Symptoms include:

  • Walk stiffly
  • Limp or favor certain limbs
  • Show stiffness or discomfort when getting up from a lying-down position
  • Display lameness in certain limbs
  • Appear to have stiff, swollen or sore joints
  • Seem to experience pain when touched in certain areas
  • Seem to find certain positions uncomfortable or painful
  • Suffer loss of flexibility in their joints
  • Be hesitant to jump, run or climb stairs

Once symptoms of arthritis set in, there is no cure. It's important for you to work with your veterinarian to create a program to minimize your dog's pain while keeping him healthy.

Some general treatment options may include:

  • Possible use of antibiotics, painkillers or anti-inflammatory medications
  • Possible use of nutritional supplements to help replenish cartilage
  • Healthy diet
  • Regular, low-impact exercise - Generally, dogs with arthritis should engage in daily low-impact exercise such as walking or, if possible, swimming.
  • Weight loss, if necessary

How Can I Make My Dog More Comfortable?

If your dog has arthritis, here are a few ways that you can make her more comfortable.

  • Give her soft bedding.
  • Have short, gentle play sessions.
  • Provide her with gentle massages and physical therapy.
  • Place food and water bowls on a low table or crate, or in a raised feeder, to avoid neck and spine strain.
  • Groom the areas of her body that may be hard for her to reach.
  • Buy her a firm, orthopedic foam bed.
  • Get a portable dog ramp to allow her access to the car or other areas where she'll have to jump or climb
Allow a Boston to Hitch a Ride with You

Many of us travel for business or pleasure by car. We are looking for you to help us transport a dog from one state to the next to get him/her into foster care or towards their forever home.

Share with us your travel plans even those scheduled in the future. Email luckypawpals@aol.com your starting and ending location, date of travel, and your name and phone number. We file the travel schedule and if the need approaches we will contact you with details.

The doggies thank you for allowing them to hitch a ride!!!!!

Remember that you can write off at tax time your gas or mileage when transporting a MABTR boston.

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.
