As a rescue person, I see and hear firsthand the horror that a dog goes through when sold online for free AND/OR no effort is made to ensure
the buyer is
g is true.
If rehoming on your own,
remember your dog is a living being with value and feelings that you should go to the adopter's home to ensure it is a safe and happy place.
READ and see how easy it is for people to create a story to get your dog. Bostons are known to be great bait dogs! Sad but true.

Planning Your Pet's Future Without You
n so many cases the pets are overlooked after something
unexpectedly happens to the owner.
MABTR wants you to be proactive to ensure the continued safety and happiness for your four-legged friend after you are gone.
It's not enough that a friend or relative verbally promised to take in your pet(s) or even that you've decided to leave money to them for that purpose. Work with an attorney to draw up a special will or trust to provide for the care and ownership of your pet(s) as well as the money necessary to care for them.
MABTR gets calls from relatives all the time that the owner passed and no one is wanting to take in their Boston, so the dog is turned over to us. We also get calls from shelters that the owner passed and the dog was brought in due to being homeless.
I could not nor do I want to imagine that my Boston would no longer be cared for or loved once I am gone. Reality is that things happen and you have to prepare your pet's future should you go before them.
Steps to take to ensure your pet is safe and happy after you are gone:
- First, make sure the person you have designated as caregiver seriously agrees to this. Many people say things like this nonchalantly in a conversation, not thinking about the reality or actual possibility.
- We strongly encourage you to go even further and have a backup plan in the event the person designated to take care of your pet cannot. The situation within the new household may have changed since the conversation OR the dynamics within the household are not right for your dog to remain a resident thus has to be rehomed.
- Make sure that money is allocated for the care of your pet especially if they are on medication. Expenses can add up and this could be a factor in the caretaker no longer able to keep your dog.
Remember that MABTR is always here for you should you find that you have no one able to take in your Boston(s). You have our permission to include our contact information in your will to ensure that we are contacted when needed so that your Boston does not land in a shelter or unwanted.
If you have another breed reach out to your local rescue organization to know their program plus obtain contact information

Adoptable Dog of the Month
Gigi, our Boston/Beagle Mix, came to us in 2008 as a foster. She was a sweet dog, but so scared - especially of men. After six weeks of working with her, we found a wonderful family that wanted to adopt her. The goodbye was hard as it always is with fosters, but she was different.
Being new foster parents, I don't think we asked enough questions. Gigi came from a puppy mill and spent most of her time in a crate, so when her new family crated her, Gigi did what she knew, and she continued to soil in the crate. After several weeks with her new family, they found Gigi wasn't a good fit for their home and they called us asking us what they should do.
I told them not to worry, we would come get her. I will never forget the call I made to my husband, "Go get my dog." I then asked Jennifer if we could adopt her. The answer was Yes! Our intent was not to foster to adopt it just happened.
Gigi has been the perfect dog. She just needed her doggy door. It took her a full year for her to warm up to Daddy, and even more time to fully trust in him, but now she can frequently be found cuddled up next to him when her mommy isn't around.
We know our time is limited with her as she ages, but we are grateful she is still part of our family of six (two humans and 4 Bostons!).

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
