June 2019
Hey Fans!
If you shop on ( who doesn't?)  you can shop the same way on,   which will donate 0.5% of the purchase price (for eligible purchases) to a charitable organization of your choice.
This includes MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue!
The HSUS has released the 2019 Horrible Hundred list of puppy mills throughout the country. Click on the link below to see if there is a puppy mill in your area.

Solution: Do not buy puppies from pet stores!!! As long as there is demand, there is a need for supply. Adopt, Don't shop!! Do your homework and ensure you are working with a reputable breeder -

What is a puppy mill?
 - a place that breeds dogs for profit only, without a care for the offspring's health, temperament, or behavior. These breeders are a type of commercial dog breeding facility per the law and are legal.
Puppy mills are inhumane commercial dog breeding facilities that may sell puppies in pet stores, online or directly to the public (in flea markets or via classified ads).
Puppy mills disregard the dogs' health - both physical and emotional - in order to maximize profits.

Heartworm season
Warm weather is here and so are mosquitoes.
What is heartworm, and why is it such a big deal?
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease that is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body.
When the infected mosquito bites another animal, the infective larvae are deposited onto the surface of the animal's skin and enter the new host through the mosquito's bite wound. Once inside a new host, it takes approximately 6 months for the larvae to mature into adult heartworms. Once mature, heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs and up to 2 or 3 years in cats. Because of the longevity of these worms, each mosquito season can lead to an increasing number of worms in an infected pet.
Is my dog at risk?
Heartworm disease is NOT contagious. The dog is a natural host for heartworms, which means that heartworms that live inside the dog mature into adults, mate and produce offspring. If untreated, their numbers can increase, and dogs have been known to harbor several hundred worms in their bodies. Heartworm disease causes lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog's health and quality of life long after the parasites are gone.
The only way to confirm your dog is positive is having a heartworm test done at a vet clinic.  Blood is drawn and tested.  Testing is recommended once a year.
To ensure your dog is on monthly heartworm preventative and tested every year.

MABTR Alumni - Gracie
"I am happy to say I adopted my Gracie Girl five years ago on May 4th! THANK YOU MABTR! First, I can't believe it's been 5 years already with the 'bestest' girl ever! Second, it was the best decision I could have ever made!!

Gracie and I both took a chance on each other...Gracie learning to trust humans and me learning how to give her the life she deserved. I have a constant companion, a little mini me!! Gracie goes to work with me every day. She can be quite the guard dog or the queen of naps! "Go For a Ride" or grabbing her harness and leash, she is right by my side out the door! It could be to go for a walk, go for a car ride, or go visit her numerous dog friends...Gracie is always ready to go!

We have both come a long way on this wonderful journey. I look forward to many more happy years!"

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

AGE is just a number
I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.

Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.

MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
*gender   *age
*disability  *health
