MAEF's Current Work &
Future Trajectory
In a recent milestone, MAEF, in collaboration with ACCEL Academy and Chickasaw City Schools, secured a grant exceeding $14 million to create "full-service schools." This groundbreaking initiative will impact over 2,000 students and families annually across five high-poverty schools, offering essential services such as physical and mental health support, career training and readiness programs for both students and parents.
As Carolyn Akers retires, she passes the torch to her mentee, Dr. Jeremiah Newell. Their journey began decades ago when Newell, then a high school student in Mobile County schools, joined MAEF with a vision for impactful educational reforms. “I am so proud to be a part of the Mobile Area Education Foundation. For 20 years now, I've had the opportunity, as a native of Mobile, to contribute to my community, to help hundreds of young people graduate, but not just graduate, pursue their dreams of success,” says Jeremiah Newell, Ed. L.D., the incoming CEO of MAEF.
