Academy Officials Meet with
Senate Public Health Chair Kirby
Physician-members of the Legislative Committee took Sen. Dean Kirby of Pearl to lunch on Friday, Dec. 14, to discuss the upcoming legislative session. Kirby serves as chair of the Mississippi Senate Public Health Committee and 2019 will be his 27th year in the state legislature.

Can You -- Yes, You -- Help With the Shortage of Preceptors?
Serving as a mentor to a medical student is rewarding for many family physicians. Won't you join their ranks? Although they're needed all over the state, William Carey University College of Medicine (WCUCOM) has a shortage of Jackson-area preceptors for the spring term.
The students who take part in these programs get a lot of benefit from the interaction. MAFP President Dr. David Wheat recently precepted UMMC medical student Amy Kaur at his Clinton clinic, and she said working with him reminded her why she wanted to go into medicine.
"Thus far in my third year, I haven't had the opportunity to spend this much time with an attending, and I honestly can't put into words how much he has improved my clinical knowledge as well as my skills in patient care," Kaur said. "He is a kind-hearted person who genuinely cares about his patients."

Strategic Planning Session, Board Meeting Held in Raymond
Twenty MAFP members met to plan the Academy's strategy for the future on Friday, Dec. 14, followed by a networking dinner, then a Board meeting the next day. The weekend was held at Eagle Ridge Conference Center in Raymond.
Board members and past presidents were invited to take part in the strategic planning session, conducted by Dr. Jason Dees of New Albany. It focused on the Academy's goals and priorities for the coming three years, and the work product will be presented to the April Board meeting for consideration before being finalized.
Dr. David Wheat, MAFP President, led the Board meeting on Saturday, at which the 2019 budget was passed and upcoming events were discussed.

Residents Learn Tobacco Cessation Strategies at MAFPF Events
Family medicine residents at two Mississippi programs have learned tobacco cessation strategies from MAFP Foundation the past ten days. MAFPF sponsored Thomas Payne, Ph.D., director of the ACT Center at UMMC, to visit both UMMC Family Medicine Residency on Dec. 12 and EC HealthNet Family Medicine Residency on Dec. 17. Both sessions emphasized to residents how to counsel their patients on tobacco cessation and gave them information about the Tobacco Quitline. Jewell Buckley of MAFPF attended the sessions with Payne.

A Reminder About ABFM's December 31 Reporting Deadline: To meet certification requirements, physicians must complete a minimum of 1 Knowledge Self-Assessment (KSA) activity, 1 Performance Improvement (PI) activity and a total of 50 certification points by completion of additional activities. Physicians will also need 150 CME hours completed within the 3-year window of their current stage.
