Senate Bill 690 Updates
July 10, 2020
Last week, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Senate Bill 690 , which appropriates nearly $880 million in federal funding to support various COVID-19 response actions across the state.

The supplemental budget included $25 million to provide Device Purchasing/Distance Learning funds to be used to “coordinate and provide an incentive for strategic purchasing of devices for use by students at home and in schools and to address access and connectivity issues for students, families and community members.” The Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA) was named as the fiscal agent to administer these funds.

MAISA will be partnering with the REMC Association to apply these incentive funds to their SPOT bid process to make the net purchase price of devices lower for districts across Michigan. MAISA will also be counting on the leadership of the Michigan Education Technology Leaders (METL) network and Intermediate Schools Districts (ISDs) across the state to support the connectivity efforts outlined in SB690.

MAISA wants to thank all of these partners in delivering these critical supports to our students and educators.

We have received a number of inquiries on how these funds can be accessed. We received an update yesterday that the Department of Treasury is aware that these funds are time-sensitive, and they are working on the process to ensure federal compliance. We are expecting an update next week on how we can proceed. MAISA will continue to update you as information becomes available.
