Since March 2020, Connections prevented eviction for more than 575 households keeping nearly 1,700 neighbors housed. Compare this to fiscal year 2019, when we helped 144 households remain housed. The increased demand for this type of support is overwhelming especially when there are no signs of it slowing down. But I am so proud of our team who is determined to help as many neighbors as possible.

A recent Harvard housing report found that more than 6 million households are behind on rent and 2 million homeowners are behind on mortgages, most of whom are people of color who face eviction at higher rates than white residents. The federal eviction moratorium, just extended, will now end next month, and the Illinois moratorium will end in August, but Connections’ commitment to prevent eviction will not.

Our expanded Eviction Prevention Team works hard every day to meet the relentless demand to quickly assist neighbors in crisis. We know that the fastest way to end homelessness is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Help us keep neighbors housed by making a gift before the end of the fiscal year on June 30.

Connections has opportunities for every member of the family to get involved and give back this summer! Individuals can volunteer at one of our drop-in locations including high schoolers when accompanied by an adult. Families can volunteer together to prepare bagged lunches or a meal for participants sheltering in the hotel.

Individuals and families can also collect in-kind donations for Connections participants. We currently need adult summer clothing and items from our Feels Like Home Amazon Wish List.
