Dear Members of MALSCE,


This first installment of my President’s Message for 2024 will focus on establishing momentum after the “Holiday-hangover.” As we are at the end of January, MALSCE hosted its annual Legal Perspectives on Land Surveying seminar last Friday, January 26th, at The Conference Center at Waltham Woods. This hybrid program attracted 105 attendees and remote participants, demonstrating the continued relevance and popularity of this seminar, which has been offered on the last Friday in January for the last 15 years. ... MALSCE is offering a Fundamentals of Surveying Exam Refresher Course during the 2024 MALSCE Convention to help participants prepare to take the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) Exam. This separate course features an eight-hour review of the knowledge areas you are likely to be tested on during the FS Exam. Utilizing two practice exams and other attendee handouts, course instructor Clark Donkin, PLS, will discuss the following subjects.

Convention Sponsorship

For the second year in a row, MALSCE is pleased to offer multiple opportunities to be a Function and/or Session Sponsor. Function Sponsors will have their organization logo included on a sign displayed at the function’s buffet table. Session Sponsors will have their organization listed as a sponsor when their session(s) are listed in promotional emails, the convention website posting, attendee booklet, and convention signage. In addition, all Sponsors will appear in the convention’s introductory PowerPoint presentation and be thanked at the beginning of the convention. Function and Session Sponsorship options are not exclusive, so if you choose to do so, you can sponsor multiple convention functions and sessions.

Booklets including the 2024 MALSCE schedule, session descriptions, and exhibitor listings will be be emailed prior to the convention to all registrants. Advertisers will be thanked during the introductory remarks for the Convention and have their organization name included in convention introductory PowerPoint presentation.

Exhibit at the 2024 MALSCE Convention


Promote your organization’s products and/or services to MALSCE members by exhibiting during the 2024 MALSCE Convention, which is taking place on Friday and Saturday, March 1 & 2. The convention exhibit is open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Friday, March 1. In addition to checking in with visitors during scheduled downtimes throughout the day, you'll have an opportunity for an extended visit during a two-hour general session after lunch.

MALSCE Needs Outreach Display Photographs


Members of the MALSCE Public Awareness Committee are planning to have a pop-up banner made that they can use when visiting schools, STEM career fairs, and appropriate conferences to talk about careers in land surveying. They are looking for copyright-free photographs of the latest survey technologies being used in various setting and other images that illustrate the diversity of the individuals, equipment, and fields of practice within the profession of surveying.

Join the MALSCE Public Awareness Committee

 

The recently reconstructed MALSCE Public Awareness Committee is charged with promoting the general recognition and acceptance of the practice of land surveying and survey engineering and stimulating a greater interest in public perceptions affecting the profession. Committee chair David Prince, PLS, from WSP, has been holding regular meetings and member of the committee have made several visits to promote a career in land surveying to secondary school students.

Tighe & Bond Acquires Coastal Engineering


On January 2, Tighe & Bond, a Northeast leader in engineering, design, and environmental consulting, announced it had acquired Cape Cod-based Coastal Engineering Co., Inc., a civil, structural, and waterfront/marine engineering firm that specializes in projects located in environmentally sensitive areas.

Andrew Liston (1949-2024)


Members of the MALSCE Board of Directors are saddened to announce the passing of former MALSCE president, Andrew Liston, PE, PLS, on January 4, 2024. Andrew, who was a long-time employee of Thompson-Liston Associates, Inc. also served as chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and as president of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.

UMaine has several different surveying degree and certificate programs available online, click here to learn more. Franklin Cummings Tech (formerly Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology) is now offering professional land surveying courses for those currently working in surveying. Other universities with online surveying and geomatics programs options include Ferris State University and Oregon Institute of Technology.
