Congratulations to Professor Susan Murch on receiving the 2022 WomiX Mentorship Award!
This award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of a womxn in metabolomics who has demonstrated strong mentorship and leadership skills and has made a large impact on other researchers in our field.
Dr. Susan Murch is one of the female pioneers in the field of metabolomics. She first published in the field in 2004 using untargeted metabolomics studies to better understand natural product metabolism in the medicinal plant Scutellaria baicalensis. She has gone on to train many of the next generations of metabolomics scientists. Dr. Murch stands out as an exceptional mentor because she champions female scientists in her lab group and inspires their interest in the field. Her approach is to assess what each of her students and mentees needs and develop personalized learning plans and approaches for each trainee. She never hesitates to find creative and supportive ways to provide the help needed.

As a major analytical method for metabolomics investigations, NMR has a number of unique advantages, including simplicity in sample preparation requirements, high reproducibility and quantitative characteristics, gold standard identification capabilities with the ability to investigate a variety of physical and chemical properties, and the possibility for in vivo evaluations through metabolomics imaging. To explore these aspects, the NMR group will organize a “Frontiers in NMR Metabolomics” workshop at the Metabolomics Society 2022 in Valencia, Spain, on June 19, 2022. The Workshop will introduce topics including NMR metabolomics overview, at low fields, in medicine, Combining NMR & MS, QA/QC in current publications, and data analyses and presentations.

One of the goals of The Brief is to create a network and build a stronger community!
For the first time ever, we present MANA Member Highlights where we ask MANA members two questions:
1) What are some grand challenges you face in metabolomics?
2) Where do you see the field in 10 years?
In this issue, we are proud to highlight Corey Broeckling, Ph.D. | Director, Untargeted Metabolomics, Proteomics at Colorado State University - check out what he has to say by clicking on the image below.

How do you obtain complete structural elucidation of lipids in one experiment?
Learn the secret on a new methodology for the complete characterization of lipids using electron activated dissociation (EAD) on the SCIEX ZenoTOF 7600 system. The rich MS/MS data produced with EAD contains unique fragment ions with patterns and intensities that can be used for complete structure elucidation. Additionally, the EAD experiment when combined with the Zeno trap is sensitive, reproducible and fast, enabling on-the-fly characterization of lipids from complex mixtures during LC separation.

Showcase your success in compound identification for up to 500 new unknowns, using raw LC-MS/MS data
In untargeted assays, approximately 80% of all MS/MS spectra remain unidentified. Yet, the last CASMI contest was performed five years ago. As molecules of former CASMI contests are now well known, new datasets must be provided for testing compound ID strategies in 2022. A new CASMI comparative assessment of small molecule identifications is overdue. Hence, the UC Davis West Coast Metabolomics Center is spearheading such a workshop to take place for the Metabolomics Society 2022 Conference in Valencia, Spain.
To make this new CASMI 2022 similar to an actual metabolomics study, we here provide raw LC-accurate mass MS/MS data in both +ESI and - ESI mode, with a list of 500 compounds and their retention times and accurate m/z values.
