MANA Early Career Members

ECM (Early Career Members) strives to empower the next generation of scientists in the field of metabolomics in North America by supporting opportunities for mentorship, networking, training, and career development opportunities.

Recent ECM Activities:

  • ECM and WomiX hosted a joint event on Feb 16, 2023, to learn about Utilizing skills gained during your PhD to navigate future careers. Here are 3 tips from our panelists:
  • Tip #1: A great place to scout at conferences is between the food table and the coffee table. Everyone stops by here eventually during the conference, and it can be a less intimidating way to make a connection with someone you've been wanting to network with. (Paraphrased from Dr. Lauren Erland)
  • Tip #2: When making a connection, regardless of academia/industry/government, you can make a more lasting impression by sharing an idea rather than simply an introduction. (Paraphrased from multiple comments across all speakers)
  • Tip #3: The NIH OITE videocasts are a great resource for trainees and have a wealth of information on a variety of topics, including pursuing careers in academia, industry, and government. Click here to learn more. (Resource shared by Dr. Haley Chatelaine)
  • Showcase of Emerging and Innovative Research seminar will be held on April 19, 2023, from 11 am - 12 pm ET / 8 am - 9 am PT. We're still looking for speakers, so don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to gain valuable experience presenting your work and networking with fellow researchers. Plus, since speakers are selected through an application-based process, this event is a great addition to your CV. Click here to submit your short application or register as an attendee!

MANA Microbiome Interest Group

MANA MIG Seminar Series Presents:

Dr. Pamela V. Chang, Cornell University - Deciphering the chemical crosstalk of host-gut microbiota interactions

Date/Time: April 10th at 11 am EST, register here

About: Despite the abundance and prevalence of the gut microbiota, little is known regarding the pathways and mechanisms by which these microbes affect host health. Emerging evidence suggests that many small-molecule metabolites that are produced by the gut microbiota have the ability to modulate host defense mechanisms in various inflammatory diseases. We describe several amino acid-derived metabolites produced by the gut microbiota that improve morbidity in mouse models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and gastrointestinal infection. In complementary work, we have also developed chemical approaches for probing the metabolic activities of biosynthetic enzymes expressed by the gut microbiota that are responsible for producing important classes of small-molecule metabolites whose metabolism is dysregulated in IBD.

If you are interested in joining MANA MIG contact Dr. Rob Quinn [email protected]

SODA

The goal of SODA is to provide a community-driven resource of actively maintained software, test datasets used for software benchmarking, and results produced by software.

MANA Member Highlights

José J. Ordaz-Ortiz, Ph.D. | Assoc. Professor | Cinvestav UGA Langebio - Irapuato, MX

Question #1: What are some grand challenges you face in metabolomics?

Metabolomics is a rapidly developing field that has gained significant attention in recent years for its potential to revolutionize our understanding of biological systems. However, there are several challenges that the area will need to overcome in the coming years to reach its full potential. One of the primary challenges is economic constraints, which is very important for a medium-income country such as Mexico, where in current times, grants for funding fundamental research are very scarce. Metabolomics research requires expensive equipment, high maintenance cost, and infrastructure to generate and analyze large amounts of data. From a scientific point of view, there are still many gaps in our understanding of the metabolome, and how it relates to biological function, metabolites annotation requires huge improvements; an open free database for metabolites annotation could support overcoming these challenges. Additionally, there is a need for standardized methods and protocols to ensure the reproducibility and comparability of results across different laboratories.

Question #2: Where do you see the field in 10 years?

In ten years, I expect metabolomics research to continue to grow and mature, with improved technologies and methods leading to increased sensitivity, accuracy, and throughput. However, the field must also address these challenges to maintain its momentum and realize its full potential for advancing our understanding of human health and disease, crop improvement, and well-being.

New technology from biocrates life sciences

Robust and reproducible results are the cornerstone of scientific findings and require standardized and quantitative methods. A ready-to-use, quality-controlled kit for quantitative metabolic profiling, called MxP® Quant 500 XL, has been developed targeting 1,019 metabolites across 39 biochemical classes of lipids and small molecules related to healthy aging, neurodegeneration, and cardiometabolic diseases. The newly developed WebIDQ workflow manager is a companion cloud software that guides users through the kit workflow and is easily accessible through web browsers. It combines machine learning-based peak picking, automated quantification and visual validation features to standardize and increase confidence in generated data. The integrated MetaboINDICATOR tool automatically calculates predefined sums and ratios for advanced biological interpretation of enzymatic activities and pathophysiological conditions.

Revolutionizing Tissue Analysis: See the Power of SpatialOMx on the timsTOF fleX in Action

Join us on May 4, 2023, at 11:00 am EST for Bruker Live from the Lab, where we'll showcase the incredible potential of our cutting-edge SpatialOMx workflow on the timsTOF fleX. This advanced technology combines MALDI imaging with UPLC-MS/MS PASEF® to deliver spatially resolved molecular information and in-depth 4D-omics from a single sample. Our team will use microgrid technology to image a mouse brain tissue slice and extract lipids for 4D-lipidomics, demonstrating the power of MetaboScape® software for feature detection, lipid annotation, and statistical analysis. Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to witness the annotated compound list visualized in SCiLS™ for distribution in the mouse brain tissue!
