Message from MANA President, Tom Metz

The 5th Annual MANA conference - October 23-27, 2023 at the University of Missouri - is just 3 months away! Time flies, and it seems like it was not that long ago that we met in Edmonton for the 2022 conference. Be sure to register and submit your abstract in time for the oral abstract deadline of August 13. Full details on the plenary speaker lineup and the list of instructional workshops are up now.

It was fantastic to see both MANA and MetSoc colleagues at MetSoc 2023 in Niagara Falls. Congratulations to MANA Secretary and Board Member, Professor Dajana Vuckovic, and her co-chair Professor Philip Britz-McKibbin, on an excellent conference. Hopefully, you had an opportunity while there to attend the MANA Networking Reception and the WomiX + FeMS Mixer and enjoyed the time meeting other MANA members at those events. MANA looks forward to working with other Affiliates of the Metabolomics Society and the Society itself on some exciting future collaborative initiatives. Stay tuned for details!

Speaking of time flying, it seems not that long ago that I joined the MANA Board of Directors and then became President. The years of the pandemic were a blur, and today I realize that nearly 5 years have passed since I volunteered to help lead MANA. This is my penultimate President's message, and on December 31 I will cycle out of the President's chair and off the Board of Directors. It has been a fun ride!

Interest Groups at #MANA2023

Save the date and join us on Mon, Oct 23, 2023, at 5 pm for our first joint workshop "MANA Interest Groups: What They Are and How to Get Involved" led by Ewy Mathé, Arpana Vaniya

News from the NMR Interest Group

Following our successful Workshop, Frontiers in NMR Metabolomics, at the Metabolomics 2022 in Valencia, we organized a sequel Workshop, Emergent Technologies in NMR Metabolomics, on June 18, at this year’s Metabolomics 2023. In the workshop, we further introduced NMR as a metabolomics tool with simplicity in sample preparation requirements, high reproducibility, and quantitative characteristics, gold standard identification capabilities with the ability to investigate a variety of physical and chemical properties, and the possibility for in vivo evaluations through metabolomics imaging. The topics of the Workshop included: 13C detection and >GHz NMR, Applying the known to the unknown: A long-term framework for metabolite ID, Machine Learning for NMR Metabolomics, NMR-Based Metabolomic Clinical Diagnostics, and Improving the coverage and quality of NMR metabolomics data.

If you are interested in joining MANA NMR, contact Prof. Robert Powers [email protected]

If you want more information about these interest groups or any of our other interest groups please check our website. All interest groups are open to new members.
