Dear MANA Members,
An error in our email dated 11.01.2023 was sent to you which included a reference to one of our sponsors, Millipore Sigma. The error was with respect to the sponsor logo. We are writing to clarify that there are two different, unaffiliated companies that use the name MERCK. Millipore Sigma’s parent company, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany uses "Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany," as a firm name in the United States and Canada, and also uses "Millipore Sigma" as a brand for its Life Sciences division. The other company, Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, NJ, US holds the rights in the trademark MERCK in the United States and Canada. Merck & Co., Inc., Kenilworth, NJ, US is not affiliated with or related to Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany and its affiliates which own the MERCK trademark in all other countries of the world. The correct version of the email is below.

Message from MANA President, Tom Metz
|
Happy New Year to all MANA members! A new year brings new opportunities, and I am excited to see what 2023 brings for our membership and all the fantastic things that we are accomplishing together using metabolomics. A new year also brings change and MANA recently elected two new members to the Board of Directors: Professors Facundo Fernández of the Georgia Institute of Technology and Ian Lewis of the University of Calgary. Welcome to both! I also offer deep appreciation and thanks to board members whose terms have recently concluded: Professors Oliver Fiehn of UC Davis and Bob Powers of the University of Nebraska. Thank you both very much for your significant dedication to and volunteer efforts on behalf of the MANA membership! Lastly, it is exciting to see our members step forward to lead and play other significant roles within MANA Interest Groups. This is the level of engagement and participation in the association that was hoped for when MANA was founded – if you would like to know more about how to get involved, then reach out to a member of the board of directors or interest group leads!

WomiX: Womxn in Metabolomics
| |
|
WomiX is committed to the advancement of Womxn in Metabolomics. Using “womxn” with an “x” in order to explicitly welcome trans women, transfeminine, genderfluid, and nonbinary participants. All MANA members and allies are welcome to our community!
Starting off the new year with new goals and resolutions brings in fresh new ideas and motivation! What's on the horizon - WomiX Mentorship Program starting its 3rd year, the announcement of the 2023 Womix Mentorship Awardee, virtual webinars, new workshops, celebrating International Women's Week, and so much more!
We would also like to introduce our three new committee members and give a big shout to our outgoing committee members Candice Ulmer and Ivana Blaženović for both their invaluable contributions to WomiX.

2023 WomiX Mentorship Program – Application Open! Deadline Jan 27, 2023!
We are seeking mentors and mentees to join the WomiX Mentorship Program!
Apply to be a mentor here.
Apply to be a mentee here.
Check out what our previous mentees have to say about their experience:
- "I joined WomiX because I was looking for mentoring programs for underrepresented individuals, seeking answers to several questions about best analytical practices, and experimental design....The WomiX experience exceeded my expectations. I found [my] mentor always willing to share her experience and knowledge. I was able to interact with mentees and learn their stories, as well as face the fear of interacting in another language." - Eleazar Vargas Mena | Ph.D. Student | University of Caldas - Colombia
- "The WomiX Mentorship Program allowed me to expand my professional network and to learn from the experiences of other women that have successful careers in metabolomics. I enjoyed the discussions with my mentor and with other mentees. Thank you for letting me be part of this program." - Elva María Novoa del Toro | Postdoc | INRAE - France
Congratulations to this year's 2023 WomiX Mentorship Award Nominees!
- Dr. Paulina de la Mata | University of Alberta
- Dr. Caroline Johnson | Yale University
- Dr. Tracey Schock | NIST
- Dr. Judith Simcox | University of Wisconsin-Madison
- Keep an eye out for the winner to be announced in February!

MANA Microbiome Interest Group
|
MANA MIG will resume its popular monthly seminar series on January 9th, 2023.
The MANA Microbiome Interest Group has started back up again. We are having our first seminar in our series on January 9th at 11 am EST. Our seminar series now highlights exciting new papers in the field and the labs that create the science, including a ‘behind the paper’ story that features how the paper came to be. The Jan 9th seminar is by the Zakular Lab at U Penn and their new paper on interactions between enterococci and C. difficile. Our Interest group meets monthly after the seminar, where we discuss plans for our group of over 100 scientists and how to attract interest to our field. If you are interested in joining MANA MIG contact Dr. Rob Quinn quinnrob@msu.edu.
MANA NMR Interest Group
In a response to a Request for Information (RFI): Soliciting Input on the Use and Reuse of Cancer Metabolomics Data from NIH/NCI, the NMR Special Interest group completed a document providing a detailed list of experiences and recommendations from the MANA NMR Special Interest Group. The document was provided to Dr. Kristine Willis, Program Director, Division of Cancer Biology at NCI/NIH. She was grateful for the effort and found the consensus recommendations very helpful. You can find the document on our home page here.
