Take Your Pantry to the MAX This Fall
Are you looking to expand the variety of produce that you are getting for your pantry this fall? If so, MANNA's Max Out Produce program may be a great fit for your organization! MANNA's Max Out Produce (MOP) initiative has been a big hit with many of our mobile delivery agencies all across the area--and for good reason!

Here's how it works: MANNA has created a tool that allows partners to request a consistent amount of produce on each order, and we do the rest! Giving us permission to select the items for you allows us to add the freshest produce in stock; all we ask is that you let us know the amount of produce pounds you would like to receive. That's it! As a bonus, if your agency opts to participate in the MOP program, some of the items that you will receive may even be so new that we don't have them available to order online yet!

Benefits of MOP Program:
  • Access to the freshest produce available in stock
  • Ensures a good variety of mixed produce; not just one or two bulk items
  • Allows you to easily control your pantry's inventory and know exactly how much product you will be receiving on a consistent basis
If these benefits do not speak for themselves, below is a testimonial from a satisfied MANNA partner agency who utilizes the MOP program:
"...we used the Max Out Produce program and really liked it. I like that with this program you get fresh produce that is available after your order goes in. The clients always love the produce as an extra, never knowing what will be available, you get more. I personally think it is a bonus all around."
--Connie, Pantry Coordinator in Yancey County

If you would like to enroll in the Max Out Produce program, please email  [email protected] for an enrollment form.

Food Safety
Contributed by WCU Nutrition and Dietetics student Kristen Miles
Food safety is an important topic. People get sick every day from eating food that has bacteria, viruses, or other contaminants that do not belong in food. Though it is possible for food to be contaminated when we buy it, it usually becomes dangerous after we buy it. Here are some steps we can take to keep our food safe: clean, separate, cook, and chill.

Clean – be sure to wash all your produce before you cut or eat it. Even if we do not plan to eat the peel, such as the rind of a cantaloupe, we can still contaminate our food as the knife cuts through the fruit.
Separate – keep raw meats and fish away from food that is already cooked and ready to eat. For instance, if you chop raw chicken before slicing vegetables for your salad, be sure to wash your knife and cutting board with soap and hot water between tasks.
Cook – be sure to cook your food until it reaches the proper temperature. Poultry and ground poultry should reach at least 165º F. Other ground meat should reach 160 º F, and unground cuts of beef, veal, lamb, pork, or ham should be cooked to 145 º F.
Chill – after food is cooked, it should be cooled in the refrigerator quickly to keep bacteria from growing. Putting food in several smaller containers rather than one large container before placing it in the fridge is one way to help chill food faster.

A Special Note for TEFAP Agencies
The USDA has announced that there will be  weekly FRESH MILK deliveries to MANNA FoodBank for the next 6 months (starting the week of October 17th), along with a  significant increase   in the selection of TEFAP products  for this final quarter of the year and beyond! The next 6 months will be the largest shipment of TEFAP products we have seen in years. This is a blessing and one that we are happy to offer you and your clients in the coming months.

In preparation for this increase, we ask that you begin planning now to make space for all of these wonderful products.  Several of the items are frozen, so we want to ensure you have space in your freezers for these products. *Please note* the TEFAP Program requires that agencies offer all products to clients, so we need to know if cold storage is a challenge for you. Distribution of TEFAP milk is not optional and we will add it to your orders as the milk arrives each week, as the shelf life is 10 days! If you have any questions regarding TEFAP, feel free to reach out to your Zone Coordinator for additional information and support. Below you will find a list of all incoming TEFAP and SAM products for October 2018:

Important Inventory Reminders
To ensure that our inventory count lines up with what we are actually distributing to our partner network, we ask that you all make sure to check the following when you receive or pick up your order from MANNA:
  • Check that product ordered (from your invoice) matches physical count of items you received
  • Pay close attention to TEFAP items especially, and make sure you receive accurate amounts of each item. Any TEFAP leftovers should always be directly reported to MANNA.
  • If there are any discrepancies in inventory vs. what was actually ordered, please contact Glenda Gragg (x1227) or Tim Williams (x1240).
Mobile Delivery Schedule
October-December 2018
REMINDERS: Before dialing up the driver, remember: Every time someone calls, they must pull off the road to answer the phone, causing additional delays. If you have any questions, contact our Warehouse Manager Lee Short at (828) 299-3663 x1260.

Please ask your volunteers to allow a 30 minute window before and after your expected MANNA delivery. Our drivers work very hard to arrive on time, but they may experience unforeseen setbacks while on the road. Giving them this window helps them to stay on track.
