MANNA MESSAGE
December, 2018
Partner Agency Highlights!
As we close out 2018, we are so grateful to have wonderful partner agencies that are helping to end hunger in WNC. Here are a few highlights from some of the agencies across our partner network:
Feeding Avery Families
Congratulations to Feeding Avery Families for being awarded Non-Profit of the year in Avery County! Your wonderful work has not gone unnoticed, and MANNA appreciates everything you do.

Transylvania Christian Ministry - The Sharing House

The ribbon has been cut and the Neighbor's Market is open for shopping! This new space will give community members a grocery store feel and promote client choice. MANNA is so thankful to be apart of this wonderful expansion.

Haywood Pathways
We are so excited to announce that through a careful vetting process Haywood Pathways has been selected to receive a refrigerated van through the Walmart Grant Opportunity. Haywood Pathways Center provides adult and family emergency shelter, a halfway house for men and women recently released from prison, a short term residential program and a community kitchen providing meals to those living in the shelter and across Haywood County. This van will help them with retail pickups and increase the capacity of service in their community.

Happy Holidays!
Contributed by WCU Nutrition and Dietetics student Kristen Miles
The holidays are time to gather with our loved ones and celebrate the people and values we hold dear. Many of us consider the holidays a time of year to prepare our favorite foods and splurge a bit, which is certainly a healthy mindset to have around food! For some of us, though, it is hard to moderate ourselves, and we end up feeling sluggish and unhealthy by the New Year. Here are some dos and don’ts to help you navigate holiday feasts to feel physically and emotionally satisfied.

  1. Do take time to savor and enjoy each bite of your meal so that you notice when you begin to feel full.
  2.  Do bring a healthy dish to the potluck to eat in combination with more indulgent foods.
  3. Do take a group walk after your holiday feast.
  4.  Don’t skip meals in preparation for or recovery from a big meal—deprivation leads to overeating later.
  5. Don’t beat yourself up if you overindulge, as a few days of unhealthy eating are not going to hurt you!
Glazed Carrots
Ingredients
4 C baby carrots, rinsed and split lengthwise if very thick (or use frozen, presliced carrots or peeled and cut carrots)
2 Tbsp butter or margarine
2 Tbsp brown sugar
½ tsp ground cinnamon
⅛ tsp salt
Directions
  1. Place the carrots in a small saucepan. Add just enough water to barely cover the carrots. Cover. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium. Cook for 7–8 minutes, just until the carrots are easily pierced with a sharp knife.
  2.  While the carrots are cooking, combine butter or margarine, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a small saucepan, and melt together over low heat (or put in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for a few seconds on high power, until margarine is mostly melted). Stir well to combine ingredients.
  3. Drain carrots, leaving them in the saucepan. Pour cinnamon mixture over carrots. Cook and stir over medium heat for 2–3 minutes, just until carrots are thoroughly coated and the glaze thickens slightly. Serve warm.

This is a great resource if you are having trouble getting out the TEFAP milk supply. Please be aware you will still need to have the milk forms filled out as normal.

Please note this change: We no longer need the TEFAP milk crates returned.
Coming soon: 2% milk starting December 12th.

Important Inventory Reminders
To ensure that our inventory count lines up with what we are actually distributing to our partner network, we ask that you all make sure to check the following when you receive or pick up your order from MANNA:
  • Check that product ordered (from your invoice) matches physical count of items you received
  • Pay close attention to TEFAP items especially, and make sure you receive accurate amounts of each item. Any TEFAP leftovers should always be directly reported to MANNA.
  • If there are any discrepancies in inventory vs. what was actually ordered, please contact Glenda Gragg (x1227) or Tim Williams (x1240).
Mobile Delivery Schedule
December 2018 - March 2019
REMINDERS: Before dialing up the driver, remember: Every time someone calls, they must pull off the road to answer the phone, causing additional delays. If you have any questions, contact our Warehouse Manager Lee Short at (828) 299-3663 x1260.

Please ask your volunteers to allow a 30 minute window before and after your expected MANNA delivery. Our drivers work very hard to arrive on time, but they may experience unforeseen setbacks while on the road. Giving them this window helps them to stay on track.

Revised Holiday ordering calendar plus January-March mobile delivery schedule is available! Just click on the link.

Mobile delivery calendars for Jan-Mar 2019 and Holiday ordering calendars are available via these links. PLEASE MAKE SURE AND LOOK FOR YOUR SPECIFIC ORDERING AND DELIVERY INFORMATION. Our delivery drivers are also handing out the Holiday calendars at each stop and the Distribution team is handing them out on the shopping floor. Agencies that shop at MANNA will notice that we have made a change to when we are doing inventory and have moved from the last days in December to January 31 st and February 1 st . With all of the holidays in December we wanted to offer our agencies that shop at MANNA extended days to come in. Please feel free to call Lisa Reynolds at 828-299-3663 if you have any questions or speak to Kevin Davis if you are in shopping .
