From The Pastor
Lent is often described as a pilgrimage—a spiritual journey where we seek to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Just as Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness, preparing for His ministry through prayer and fasting, we too are invited to enter a season of self-examination, repentance, and renewal. This journey is not about perfection, but about drawing closer to God, one step at a time.
The three traditional practices of Lent—prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—offer us ways to deepen our relationship with Jesus and others. Through prayer, we open our hearts to hear God’s voice more clearly. Through fasting, we empty ourselves of distractions, making room for God’s presence to fill us. Through almsgiving, we extend Christ’s love to those in need, reminding us that our faith is lived out in service to others.
This year, I encourage you to approach Lent with curiosity and openness. Ask yourself: What is God calling me to lay down during this season? What new practices might God be inviting me to embrace? Maybe it’s dedicating more time to Scripture, stepping away from a bad habit, or finding new ways to serve in Oskaloosa. Whatever it may be, know that God walks with you every step of the way.
We are not walking this path alone. We support and encourage one another, sharing in both the struggles and the joys of this sacred time. Let us be intentional in praying for one another, in gathering for worship, and in reaching out to those who may feel distant from God or the church.
Lent is our invitation to return, to rediscover, and to prepare our hearts for the resurrection hope of Easter.
May this season of Lent be a time of growth, renewed faith, and deepened relationship with Jesus and others. Let us journey together with open hearts, trusting that God’s grace is sufficient, every step of the way.
As always, I look forward to seeing you, especially in worship.
