Throughout the fall, MARCO has been partnering with top scientists to explore the deep sea canyons through a webinar series, "Life in the Deep Sea." Millions of people live along the Atlantic coast and spend time recreating on our beaches and shores. Yet few people know that far offshore and deep underwater lie some of the most majestic and remarkable features in our ocean. Deep sea canyons run along the underwater coast of the Mid-Atlantic at various points along the shelf break and provide vital habitat to ancient corals and other unique species who would otherwise have difficulty thriving in the harsh, cold, dark environment. Studying these fragile habitats and the hidden and unusual species that live in them is important to understanding how our decisions and daily behavior can impact little known areas of the ocean far away and unseen. A video and slides are now available for the Oct. 8 webinar Mid-Atlantic Port Access and Navigation Safety Studies, hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Committee on the Ocean (MACO). The session featured a presentation by U.S. Coast Guard personnel about a series of Port Access Route Studies (PARS) the agency is leading along the Atlantic Coast as offshore wind development proceeds, as well as a panel discussion with representatives of the port, maritime and offshore wind industries.

The big wheels keep on turning for the Navesink Queen. After a long run serving passengers in Virginia as a ferry, the old-time paddle wheeler was purchased by Capt. Dan Schade in 2019 and restored for service as a charter vessel in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.
Come rolling on the rivers and bays with Capt. Schade in our latest edition of the MARCO Portal's Ocean Stories series. The story and its interactive data maps provide a snapshot of life navigating some of the busiest waters in the Mid-Atlantic aboard

MARCO Awarded Two Project Grants by Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program
In October, MARCO was awarded two project grants from the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program:
- 2021 Mid-Atlantic Marine Debris Regional Summit
To support a two-day Mid-Atlantic Marine Debris Regional Summit in the spring/summer of 2021
- Development and Use of Webinars and Surveys to Engage Ocean Stakeholders
To conduct outreach in the Commonwealth of Virginia related to the construction of offshore wind facilities, development of additional shipping fairways and other ocean management issues.

Mid-Atlantic Hurricane Tracks, Offshore Wind Speed Maps Added to MARCO Portal

Work Group Work Plans and Mid-Year Progress Reports Published
Collaboration on key issues takes place between governmental agencies, tribal nations and many other interested stakeholders through a series of specially focused work groups. The January - June 2020 semi-annual progress reports and work plans can now be found on the website.

MARCO State Spotlight: Maryland

Black sea bass are the single most landed recreational fish caught in Maryland's nearshore waters, including at wreck and artificial reef sites within and near the Maryland Wind Energy Area (WEA). Professor David Secor and his students at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science electronically tagged black sea bass during the summers of 2016-2019 to evaluate baseline movement behaviors and condition in advance of offshore wind development. This work was supported through Maryland's Offshore Wind Development Fund to help address key information gaps on important fishery resources. Here is what they discovered. Read More

States Receive Assistance As Part of the $300 Million Federal CARES Act
New Jersey: The Murphy Administration is making $11.2 million in financial assistance available to commercial and recreational fishing businesses impacted by the COVID-19 public health emergency, Governor Phil Murphy and the Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Catherine R. McCabe announced 10/22020.The funding is available as grants to eligible businesses that document a 35-percent loss in revenues as a result of the pandemic. New York's Geographic Information Gateway News: New Risk Areas Data Layer
New York's GIS Team has developed new (Department of State) Risk Areas for the Hudson River coast up to the Troy Federal Dam, the inland extent of New York's Coastal Area, data layer available for viewing on the Gateway. DOS Risk Areas were first derived and used in 2012 for New York Rising Community Reconstruction planning carried out in the wake of Hurricane Sandy (which also included communities affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee), the areas are a compilation of regulatory flood maps, inundation, and erosion models resulting in Extreme, High and Moderate risk areas. In addition, a companion Risk Assessment Tool has been customized for landscapes found along the Hudson River Shoreline, this resource is available on the Climate Change and Resilience focus area's Additional Resources section of the Gateway. Maryland, Virginia Sign Offshore Wind Collaborative MOU The Governors of Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina have signed the first offshore wind collaborative memorandum of understanding in the nation. This landmark agreement will create partnerships around workforce, state and federal policy, supply chain and stakeholder engagement to benefit all states.
