Seaports and airports are not only hubs for the large carriers that travel the globe, they are also major modal centers for unloading and loading business and pleasure people and huge quantities of trade goods. As such, they require significant ground fleets and people movers. All this equipment currently uses some of the dirtiest fossil fuels that are made. The Port of Seattle is looking both at its huge local fleet of transferring and servicing vehicles for cleaner fuel and electrification, but also participating in initiatives to clean up the large planes and ships it serves. Keith shares their goals, strategy, programs and progress at a major intersection of our present and future. Prepare to be transported into a world we all need to know more about and one in which we all need to support to find better ways to power into the future.

As we endanger the planet with our pressing civilization, we are also learning by leaps and bounds how that planet works. Biochar has been part of indigenous practices for millennia and now we are learning in detail how important it is to the health of trees. Kelby Fite is an expert in biochar and its effect on trees. He will share what he has learned in a botanical and gastronomical adventure into the lives of trees.

Kelby’s presentation will focus on the journey discovering the use of biochar in the urban and suburban landscape for the health of shade trees. As biochar first became a topic of discussion, it was met with much skepticism, but investigations proceeded and led to the discovery of its usefulness to reduce environmental stresses and disease pressure on the urban tree canopy. The talk with give a brief background of biochar, the research behind its use and the standard industry practices in use today.
