Jeannette Rivera-Sone– Learning Disability Teacher
What is your position at Marshall, and what do you enjoy most about it? I am a Learning Disabilities Teacher who teaches Algebra 1 and Geometry. My favorite part about what I do is helping students take something that might be hard to do - whether that's a math problem or just asking for extra help - and helping them try it anyway.
What’s one fun fact students might not know about you? One fun fact that students don't always know is that I wasn't a math person in school. I like teaching it because I remember it being a challenge, and I always had to try different ways of visualizing problems to make information stick!
If you weren’t in education, what would you be doing instead? I have always wanted to try writing picture books for children, so if I weren't an educator, I'd try being an author.
What advice would you give to students about making the most of high school? To make the most out of high school, I'd encourage students to try different extracurriculars and electives. We have so many ways to explore new interests and meet different people in our school.
What’s one thing you hope students take away from your class or role? I hope that if there's anything that students recognize about my class, it's that we're a community. Math is hard, and I want them to feel supported by our staff and other students enough to give their best effort.
What’s one thing parents can doat home to support their student’s success? Students starting high school have told me often over the years that it's hard to balance being more responsible for themselves with the fun of having more independence than in middle school. I think they benefit from parents helping make sure they're on track with assignments and organization - even if they don't always admit it!
