Unfunded Mandate Passes Out of
House Judiciary B Committee
House Bill 1089
On Thursday, February 16th, the Mississippi House of Representatives Judiciary B Committee passed House Bill 1089. This measure amends Mississippi Code 99-15-17 and increases the compensation for counsel appointed to indigents. In Section 1 of this measure, the compensation increases are as follows:
- Representation in circuit court goes from $1,000.00 to $5,000.00.
- If appeal is non-court of record it goes from $200.00 to $1,000.00
- For capitol cases it goes from $2,000.00 to $10,000.00
- If appealed to the state supreme court, it goes from $1,000.00 to $5,000.00
NOTE: In subsection 2 of this measure, this bill is set to repeal on July 1, 2027.
