MAMS 5th Graders Welcome WWII Survivor, Bernice Kelley

Moon Area 5th graders welcomed a very special guest on Monday, November 25, 2019 - Mrs. Bernice Kelley.

Kelley spent her childhood in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (present-day Slovakia), from 1938-1946 and experienced the Nazi occupation in her hometown. During World War II, her father fought for the US but sent for his family in Czechoslovakia in July 1946 to be reunited in America.

Kelley spoke to students about living during a World War and immigrating to the McKees Rocks, PA, via boat with her family after the war.

Mrs. Kelley also engaged in a question and answer session with students as they asked about her difficulty learning a new language, her favorite part about America, and what her everyday life was like in Bratislava.

In addition to speaking with the students, Mrs. Kelley shared pictures of her family members to accompany her memorable stories.

This topic coincides with students beginning their book study of Number in the Stars by Lois Lowry, a story about a Danish family's impact in hiding and saving a young Jewish girl during the war.

Thank you for visiting, Mrs. Kelley!

MAHS Welcomed Broadway Star, Adam Pascal, for Masterclass Session

Moon Area students were given a unique opportunity to learn from Broadway  and film star, Adam Pascal, during a masterclass session on Friday, November 22, 2019.

Moon Area High School Drama Club sponsor, Mr. Robert Michael, organized the event for any student looking to hear about Pascal's career in acting and to receive professional coaching.

During the question and answer session, Pascal explained that he didn't have any formal training prior to joining the cast of  RENT and was in a rock band at that time. However, his childhood friend Idina Menzel (Elsa from Frozen) convinced him to try out for a new off-Broadway show,  RENT, which launched his career in 2005.

Students inquired whether actors have influence during the production of movi es and Broadway shows to which Pascal said the director of  RENT , Chris Columbus, allowed the original Broadway cast to have as much input into the film as possible.

As students prepare to audition for the spring musical, Pascal heard vocal performances from participating students and offered his professional feedback and tips for auditioning and performing.

Pascal's breakthrough role as Roger in the film and Broadway versions of  RENT earned him a Tony Award nomination. As he advanced in his career, he worked with Elton John while taking on the role of Radames in  Aida and he has also been in movies such as  School of Rock, Stepbrothers, Temptation, and  Cold Case.
