Recap: 2018 Homecoming Celebrations

There were many celebrations the week of September 24 for 2018 Homecoming!

Students across the District celebrated themed dress up days concluding with "Extreme Red and White" on Friday, September 28.

The Homecoming Parade and Carnival was held on Thursday, September 27 where numerous sports and organizations marched from Moon Area Middle School to Tiger Stadium for a community pep rally prior to the game.

A carnival with a variety of games and fundraisers took place just outside of the stadium entrance immediately following the parade. Although it rained, the carnival was still a success, especially the dunk tank and pie-in-the-face!

On Friday, September 28, Moon Area High School and Moon Area Middle School teamed up to host a joint, outdoor pep assembly in anticipation of the homecoming game later that evening. The entire stadium was filled with energy with performances by the band, cheerleaders, dance team, and a surprise flashmob from the middle and high school staffs ( click here to view on facebook)!

At halftime of the homecoming game against Bethel Park, Amaya Faulkner was announced as the 2018 Homecoming Queen! Although, the football team lost against Bethel Park, Tiger fans celebrated their school spirit all evening.

MAMS 5th Graders Create Bee Condos

While the campus is now buzzing with activity, the secondary campus is making a buzz of its own.

Middle School Lower House 5th graders are taking part in a brand new STEM activity relating to bees.

In a collaboration with the Tech Ed department and the 5th grade Science curriculum, the science teachers at the Middle School introduced Life Science with this buzzing topic.

Students and teachers discussed topics relating to bees' habitats, niches, and interactions in their ecosystems.  After discussing the importance of our area's native bees and things we can do to help them thrive, the 5th graders took a trip to the Tech Ed shop to cut, drill, sand, and nail bee condos together to provide a protective habitat for many bees to visit.

MASD Launches "Choose Kind" Campaign

Moon Area School District continually strives to help build a united community. This year, we are increasing our focus on kindness both in and out of school. We believe that building a foundation as a unified community that is focused on traits such as kindness, responsibility, respect, generosity, honesty, etc., can help prevent bullying.

With this in mind, we wanted to share with you the launch of our "Choose Kind" initiative. This initiative spans grades K-12 with an extended focus on reaching the community, as well, to spread one joint message: kindness.

The last Friday of each month, we will celebrate a different character trait that builds and reinforces the Choose Kind campaign. This month, students focused on kindness and in October students will focus on responsibility.

By focusing on school-wide positive behavior supports, we believe that our students, families, staff, and community members will strengthen a message to be safe, be kind, and own your actions. Through our anti-bullying program, Rachel's Challenge, we believe that we can emphasize ways to spread positivity and therefore reinforce safety in both our schools and community.

We know that a child's surroundings plays a large role in their life and we hope to see our families and community members support our Choose Kind initiative throughout Moon and Crescent Townships. If you would like to join our kindness mission, you may purchase a "Choose Kind" shirt on our school store at  www.moontigersapparel.com and wear it the last Friday of each month! We believe we can make a positive influence on our youth together, as a community.

Moon Area High School was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from the National Education Association (NEA) Foundation to start an aquaponic farm.

The purpose of the grant is to allow Invention Lab students to design, manufacture, and maintain the aqua pond and then for the Life Skills students to develop work skills by growing produce and fish.

The aqua pond will also be available to the science teachers to develop lessons for hands-on learning opportunities.

High school teachers Mr. James Petrina, Ms. Kate Robson, Ms. Sarah Knaus, and Mrs. Diane Corsi will oversee the aqua farm initiative.

FAFSA: The Benefits for All Post-Secondary Bound Students

The Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may seem like a lifetime away if your student is not a senior, but there are many reasons to keep it on your radar for students who may pursue post-secondary education.

Moon Area High School College and Career Counselor, Julie Sitko, recommends that everyone apply, whether or not you think you'll qualify. "I recommend all families complete the FAFSA, at least the first year the child goes to college," she said.

The FAFSA is available for students to complete after October 1 of the senior year. Some families may not qualify to receive aid, but there are several advantages to filing the FAFSA, anyway:
You'll have a better chance at state, federal, and school-based aid.  Some colleges require students to file the FAFSA for merit scholarships.  The deadline for filing the FAFSA in Pennsylvania is May 1. However, it is strongly recommended you file well before May 1 as the state has a limited amount of aid and dispense money based on when an application was submitted - so they may run out of money.
  • You will be better able to compare financial aid packages. If you complete the FAFSA and indicate what schools you'll be applying to, state and federal aid will be the same across schools (unless you are looking out of Pennsylvania, then state aid may not be available).
  • Scholarship eligibility. Some scholarships not related to colleges, look at your FAFSA. Make sure you qualify for all scholarships by filing the FAFSA.
  • Sometimes, filing a FAFSA shows a college that you are really interested in them. If you file the FAFSA and indicate schools, the colleges sees that and might think you are a serious candidate and more likely to enroll.
  • Qualifying for lower interest loans. Even if you don't think your family will qualify for aid, filing the FAFSA can give you access to lower rate loans (including the Parent PLUS loan).

Moon Area High School FAFSA Informational Opportunities
On October 9, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the high school LGI, College and Career Counselor Ms. Julie Sitko will host a Financial Aid Night. Directrly after the Financial Aid Night disucssion, she will host a FAFSA Completion Workshop. To attend the workshop, please contact Ms. Sitko at [email protected] or 412-262-9440 x2038.

MASD Names Playing Field at Tiger Stadium After Former Athletic Director

The Moon Area School District (MASD) celebrated the contributions of the late William "Rip" Scherer in naming of the playing field at Tiger Stadium in his honor on Friday, September 14, 2018.

The field name was unveiled during halftime at the football game against Baldwin High School. Mrs. June Scherer and their children were in attendance at the game along with their extended family, as well.

A brick marquee was installed near the main gate entrance to the stadium with a plaque to honor Mr. Scherer. A piece of the scoreboard was also replaced on the field to signify William "Rip" Scherer Field.

"This was such a moving opportunity for our family to swim in an endless tide appreciation - a tide that kept washing over us all night, through the words of people who kept coming up to us to share a story with my father - people whose lives had been so positively impacted by Coach Scherer, Mr. Scherer, or however they knew him," said son Scott Scherer.

Scherer served as the athletic director for MASD in 1969 and served the District for 22 years. Holding positions as athletic director, health and physical education department chair, and head football coach, Scherer's influence spanned multiple facets of the District.

From 1970-1981, he expanded the athletic opportunities at Moon Area by adding girls' basketball, softball, tennis, gymnastics, field hockey, track, bowling, volleyball, soccer, and cross country teams. Scherer's dedication to equal opportunity is displayed in the addition of these teams as the Title IX guidelines were not yet in place. During these formative years, he also added boys' wrestling, cross country, bowling, and soccer programs to the District.

The William "Rip" Scherer Memorial Recognition Committee has been working to honor the service and contributions of Mr. Scherer and was approved on April 9, 2018, by the Moon Area School District Board of Education to move forward with the dedication of the field.

"It has been a distinct honor and a pleasure to have played a small role in the naming of William "Rip" Scherer Field, which is a well-deserved public and permanent acknowledgment of the lasting impact that Rip had on the lives of so many," said committee member and MASD School Board vice president, Mr. Hauser.
