New Tropicals!!

A MASSIVE new order of magnificent tropical houseplants has arrived! The classroom area is overflowing with jaw-dropping beauty and we are already SELLING OUT of certain types of plants! There are many new-to-us plants, such as Philodendron 'Atabapoense' and ‘White Knight’, Maranta variegated ‘Beauty Kim’, Vanilla Orchid ‘Variegated’ (YES you can grow your own Vanilla!), Bignonia argyro violacea, Euphorbia lactea ‘Brain cactus’ in a variety of colors, Cinnamomum zeylanicum (YES you can grow your own Cinnamon!), Peperomia ‘Funky Frog’, ZZ ‘Super Nova’, and more. 

We also have customer favorites such as Monstera ‘Thai Constellation’, Venus Fly Traps, Peperomia ‘Watermelon’, a slew of lovely Calatheas, low maintenance Snake Plants in a range of patterns and colors, little 2” plants perfect for terrariums, African Violets, and lots more!

We also carry nice misters in our Garden Shop (very helpful to keep jungle plants happy in dry winter homes), Dirtcraft, and other potting soils organic fertilizers including many for houseplants and pretty pots.

Vanilla Bean Orchid

Grow REAL vanilla! True vanilla has flavor and fragrance far superior, and complex compared to extracts (which come from beavers). The fruit, or “beans” of the flowers have a long history of culinary use and were once only available to the wealthiest members of society. Per pound, premium grade Vanilla beans are still extraordinarily expensive. 

Native to rainforests in Mexico and Belize, these large vining epiphytes climb trees in the wild but can be trained onto all manner of poles and trellises. They do require high humidity (around 80% RH) and prefer daytime temperatures of 80-95F and nighttime temperatures of 50-70F. Good air circulation will help prevent disease. A sunroom or greenhouse would be an ideal location.

Have patience, they must grow to a large size (at least 10’ long) before they start blooming in lovely fragrant clusters. Blooms only last for one day, so that is your chance to hand-pollinate using a cotton swab or chopstick the morning of their bloom. It takes pods at least 4-6 months to mature, and the beans must be processed. 

This is an excellent plant for those excited by the challenge of growing this incredible edible orchid, which is now endangered in the wild. Enjoy the rare delight of cooking with your own homegrown vanilla!

Houseplants – winter inspiration

An artist friend lives in a small apartment/studio. In addition to her paintings - some of which have an inspirational story behind them - she tastefully displays an assortment of small Tropicals. These plants are an inspiration especially in cold, winter weather when it is not pleasant to be outside.

Last week we received a large shipment of gorgeous Tropicals. The variety is amazing and there are plants for almost any situation. They are on display downstairs in our Garden Shop.
