Memphis, TN—For the first time in its history, the Memphis Area Transit Authority is seeking ongoing advisory support from the community with the development of the NEW MATA Citizens' Advisory Committee (MCAC). The structure is patterned after committees and councils that have been formed in other transit systems.
"We feel the MCAC will be a more intentional and consistent way of seeking community support," said Bacarra Mauldin, MATA interim CEO. "We have to do things differently to truly transform transit for the Mid-South, and we're grateful this idea aligns with those expressed by Mayor Young and many of our community advocates."
Mauldin says they're currently seeking applications for Mid-South residents interested in serving on the committee online at MATAtransit.com. Representatives will be selected in various areas of Memphis and advise MATA leadership on potential solutions to improve public transportation in this area.
"The MATA Board will still have ultimate authority over our organization, but now we'll have even more support from our community," said Mauldin.
Participants will be selected by a committee composed of board members, transit employees, and community leaders. The final selections are expected to be announced in May.
